Ancestry and Background
[edit]

It seems that the details of Gibbes' ancestry and background given here are completely spurious. A bigamist with illegitimate children, he had much to hide and his descendants had much to invent. What are the sources for the statement that his father was a member of the West Indian Gibbes family? The article in The Ancestral Searcher (1996) says, without quoted evidence, that he was the son of Agnes Gibbes (the second daughter of Sir Philip Gibbes, Baronet), and gives completely bogus references to Betham's Baronetage and Burke's Peerage, neither of which mention his nominal father John Gibbes, the planter of Barbados and London. Who was "the Revd D Geary Dejether" who is said to have been John's tutor? A "John Gibbs" was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, 1795-9, but the published Register says that he was born 30 March 1786. What evidence is there that this is the same man? I have recently noted that he could very well be the John Gibbs, son of John and Margaret Gibbs, who was baptised at St Anne, Soho, on 17 April 1787, the entry saying that he was born 30 March 1787. AnthonyCamp (talk) 10:28, 22 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]

I presume that the arms attributed to him in the stained glass window are equally spurious, but it would be interesting to know what they are. AnthonyCamp (talk) 08:24, 26 July 2020 (UTC).[reply]
