[edit]I think this redirection should be deleted.
There are two lists of Earls of Mar in the article which lists these Earls (Earl of Mar). It is quite legitimate that there should be two lists, and that between 1560 (say) and 1866 these two lists include the same nine individuals. There is no great problem with this in that the very old noble titles often have anomalies at some point, and one such has resulted in there being two 'Earl of Mar' lines at any one time in the last 150 years.
However, if you look carefully you will see that the two Earldoms are not quite in step when it comes to numbering the Earls of Mar (this is not true of the other titles). Compare, for instance, Charles Erskine, 21st Earl in one list and 22nd Earl in the other.
The Wikipedia articles for the Earls who are in both lists are consistently titled by the lower numbers (eg Charles_Erskine,_21st_Earl_of_Mar for Charles, 21st or 22nd Earl of Mar including those references in the main lists where there is no actual corresponding article.
However, I believe the confusion has meant that someone has put in this redirection for the 23rd Earl (ie 23rd or 24th Earl) which mistakenly redirects to the 22nd Earl (ie 22nd or 23rd Earl).
I will edit the redirection to do nothing, but I expect the 'proper' action would be to delete the redirection page. Maybe an experienced editor would like to do that?

- The numbering issue has largely been resolved on the Earl of Mar page now; as such the "John Erskine 23rd Earl" the title refers to is John Francis, the person the title was restored to in 1824, not "Bobbing John" Erskine who was attainted in 1716.
- The easiest way to clarify this title and sort out the redirect issue was to write a stub about the 1824 earl, so I’ve done that. Swanny18 (talk) 23:37, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Moved
[edit]Following the discussion here, I've moved this page so that the subject is disambiguated by date. This is far less confusing than by succession number. Swanny18 (talk) 20:02, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
