Category:American slave owners
[edit]No mention of slave-owning. I feel that this category should be restricted to people whose slave-owning history was notable in itself. Valetude (talk) 13:04, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- As Governor, he won the U.S. Supreme Court case Governor of Georgia v. Madrazo, which was a dispute over his (or the state's) ownership of a group of slaves. I think that makes his slave-owning highly notable. In my understanding, this was treated simply as a property dispute in the court system at the time. The legal issues might have been considered the same if it was a dispute over barrels of nails rather than people, but at its core, he pursued a case in which he was a named party (as an office-holder) in a U.S. Supreme Court case about the ownership of enslaved people. And he won the case, so he/Georgia was able to keep the slaves without being forced to provide any compensation to Madrazo. — BarrelProof (talk) 15:30, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
