Ejected for spitball on May 2, 1968 at New York Mets
[edit]I don't have time right now to incorporate this into the article, but I'll leave the newspaper accounts. Quick summary: bottom 7th following rain delay, JB licked his fingers/spit on his hand during the 8 warmup pitches and 3 balls were awarded to the next batter who was still in the ondeck circle. The 3rd time he was ejected along with Gene Mauch. (The batter, coming up to bat with a 3-0 count, eventually grounds out to the pitcher-1st.) Apparently, there was a rule change about going to the mouth which took effect this season; he was the 1st to be ejected under the terms of the new rule.
If someone else wants to take this on in the meantime, go right ahead!
