Proof of origin?
[edit]The article says Bethune was “descended from the Lairds of Balfour”, who have a section in the article House of Bethune. Where is the proof for this statement? If there is no proof, I suggest it is deleted.--Hors-la-loi 09:18, 27 August 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hors-la-loi (talk • contribs)
- I don't know what the proof is, but a descent from the Bethunes of Balfour is claimed in his bio in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography (DCB) here: [1]. That webpage says says that his biography is part of "Volume V" of the DCB; according to the Wikipedia article on the DCB, that volume was published in 1982. I think Bannerman's book on the Gaelic Beatons was published in 1986 (the version on GoogleBooks dates from that year at least). I wonder if the book shows that John's ancestors were members of the Gaelic family rather than that of the lairds.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 05:32, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
