Is this a reliable reference?

[edit]

This site, akin to what wikipedia states, says that John Barry was born on March 25, 1745. However, a majority of the sources that I have encountered state his birth time simply as 1745. The only other site which said he was born on March 25 was the about.com site on him, which was a mirror site of multiple articles, wikipedia being one article that was mirrored. So, should this source be added next to his date of birth, or should his birthday be taken and left at just 1745? Backtable Speak to meconcerning my deeds. 22:12, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • This site (scroll all the way down) lists the inscription on the Barry Memorial in Philadelphia: "In memory of John Barry, father of the American Navy, born in Co. Wexford, Ireland, March 25, 1745...." Click on the thumbnail to view the whole memorial. I would say that written in stone is reliable!--BillFlis (talk) 14:40, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Location of Commodore Barry Bust at US Naval Academy

[edit]

Hello. I am a current Midshipman at the US Naval Academy. I just wanted to clarify that Commodore Barry's bust and plaque are not in Rickover hall. They are in the Mahan hall foyer. If you enter Mahan hall by the main entrance, turn right and walk to that end of the foyer, the bust and plaque shown in the picture will be on your right. 2607:FB91:8C5:F57E:ED99:F994:D1A4:CD67 (talk) 00:20, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What is the source for the statement that John Barry served in the Royal Navy? All sources I have state he became a cabin boy on a commercial ship and was a mercantile captain at 21 173.3.9.48 (talk) 15:30, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
