Study with Elgar
[edit]The article faithfully reports that Grove and Baker say Carpenter studied with Elgar in Rome in 1906, but I think both sources have the year wrong:
- Elgar first visited Rome in 1907. (Jerrold Northrop Moore, Elgar: A Creative Life, 1999, p. 510: January 1907: "It was Edward's first sight of the Eternal City, and he was overwhelmed".)
- Carpenter's biographer Howard Pollack says, "The Carpenters subsequently spent the following winter (1907-8) in Rome, so that John could study with Elgar. They probably arrived in December 1907." (Skyscraper Lullaby: The Life and Music of John Alden Carpenter, 1995, p. 48).
If anyone can shed further light on this it would be a good thing. Tim riley talk 10:14, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
