Talk:John (surname)

I have two issues with this article. Last time I edited an article myself, my edit immediately got reverted and I got a warning on my user talk page for "possible vandalism", even though the edit was with good intent, so I figure this time around I will post on the talk page first, because unfortunately Wikipedia can be a bit authoritarian when it comes to this. 1. If my knowledge of the syntax of Indian names is correct, "A.J. John" (Anuparambil Joseph John) is not the name of a person with first names Anuparambil Joseph and last name John, but rather a name formula meaning John, the son of Joseph, from the town of Anuparambil. In that case, "John" is not a surname here and he shouldn't be listed on a page with people with the surname John. 2. Are you sure the German surname John is the same as the English surname John, and not a homograph with a different etymology, or perhaps the same etymology, but in either case a different pronunciation, IPA [joːn]? To your second point: according to the German wp here the German surname John is pronounced differently but has the same etymology. No indication of a source, unfortunately.--Lieven Smits (talk) 14:20, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
