[edit]I saw his name rendered as Johannes von Layß somewhere. It would be great if someone could comment on its accuracy. 83.9.45.89 00:40, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
German names or words in general were spelled many different ways, often the way it sounded to a particular person, and people from different areas pronounced and still pronounce words a lot differently. Standardized spelling based on High German only came in the 20th century and at the end of the 20th century there was another big spelling 'reform' amongst the different German-speaking countries of Europe, which many people cannot keep up with. Often in one and the same old documents one can find the same name spelled differently each time. Over the centuries you can find one family name spelled dozens of different ways for above reasons.
