Merge to Book of Joel

[edit]

@BobKilcoyne: reverted this merge and requested that it be discussed.

This article was created by and almost entirely written by User:JohnThorne, who has been banned from editing for adding lots of poorly sourced and poorly weighted content, which seems to include a large number of articles about specific Bible chapters. I've been undertaking a long-term project to clean up this mess, which usually just involves trimming POV text and merging into the book article. In this case, all the other chapters have been merged to Book of Joel.

It's weird that the article gives the text of three verses and not the others. What it says about those verses seems to represent only one point of view, which is not permissible. There must be hundreds or thousands of individual Bible commentaries that have something to say about these verses. It seems impractical to include all of them, though citations to secondary sources that summarize the major schools of thought would be welcome. It's unclear that commenting on the specific words used is a level of detail that encyclopedia readers need, so I just dropped this section entirely when merging.

Is there anything here that you think would be worth mentioning on Book of Joel? When doing this cleanup for other books sometimes there are indeed tidbits worth keeping, but in this case that article already seems to hit the major points.

Even if we keep all the content from this article, the resulting merged article will still be reasonably short. Merging prevents a lot of repetition about verse numbering, authorship and context of the book, surviving early manuscripts, etc. and in general seems to make life easier for readers trying to learn about this book and all its chapters. -- Beland (talk) 04:32, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"who has been banned from editing for adding lots of poorly sourced and poorly weighted content" The note by User:El C explains that JohnThorne was banned for copyright violations, not the quality of his/her articles. Dimadick (talk) 14:22, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's certainly true for the second ban; I was thinking of the complaints on the first topic ban, which cover both kinds of problems, and specifically mention these Bible articles. -- Beland (talk) 16:18, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Beland. I've been away. I'm not too concerned about whether there are separate Wikipedia articles per chapter or one article for the whole book, happy that some of the previous content does not need to be repeated but there is content in the previous articles which I think is worth keeping/reviewing/developing from various points of view, which I will revisit now I'm back. OK, I merged the non-overlapping content I would have otherwise deleted to Book of Joel#Language in specific verses and added problem tags. Feel free to develop as you see fit; if needed, we can discuss on the talk page for that article. -- Beland (talk) 16:30, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
