In August 2005, May appeared in Blackbird by David Harrower alongside Roger Allam at the Edinburgh Festival in a production by German director Peter Stein. The play transferred to the Albery Theatre, London in February 2006 and won a best new play award.[citation needed]
In 2010, she played the lead role of Kay in Mark Haddon's play Polar Bears at the Donmar Warehouse.
In 2015, she appeared in the Season 5 premiere of the HBO series Game of Thrones.
Last name sourcing
[edit]So, the article currently states two names for the subject:
- Jodhi May
- A birth name of Jodhi Hakim-Edwards, which is sourced to a print copy of The Life and Times of Malcolm McLaren- The Biography by Paul Gorman
This creates, at best, a problem, with how to present the subject's current name.
- In the absence of a source for a name change, it would be to list the birth name and "(known professionally as Jodhi May)".
- In the presence of a source for a name change, it would be the status quo situation, "Jodhi May (born...)".
- If multiple sources are presented to refute the biography, it could be reduced to just "Jodhi May".
- A possible alternate presentation of the birth name in a note.
On the one hand, the current sources lean toward 1, and her attitude toward privacy would likely make it hard to get to sources for option 2. On the other, is this sufficiently a privacy issue that 4 or 3 is a better option? Please make sure to back your position up with WP policy. —C.Fred (talk) 18:07, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- The listing of “Jodhi Hakim-Edwards” as Jodhi May’s birth name is incorrect. Her birth certificate and legal documents confirm her name has always been “Jodhi May,” and these can be provided if required.
- The cited source, The Life and Times of Malcolm McLaren, doesn’t meet reliable standards and contradicts her legal records. Wikipedia’s BLP policy requires accurate, verifiable information, especially regarding personal identity. Including unverified or disputed details is not in line with these standards.
- With clear legal proof that her name is “Jodhi May,” the article should reflect this without mentioning the incorrect birth name or adding unnecessary notes, ensuring compliance with BLP guidelines.KMWIKI2024 (talk) 17:45, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- @KMWIKI2024 If the birth certificate is to be used as a source, then we need a (link to a) reliable source that discusses it in depth for it to be usable. Why do you feel that the biography of McLaren does not meet the reliability standards? —C.Fred (talk) 18:45, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Reviewing the book[1] it doesn't seem to confirm the Hakim part. The book also implies that McLaren (Edwards) is not really her father. Morbidthoughts (talk) 19:20, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that Hakim is absent but Edwards is verified. The implication that McLaren is not her father is subtle but present, and the text can infer that she has legally changed her name to Jodhi May, although that's reading a lot into the wording. —C.Fred (talk) 02:02, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
I found three reliable sources that state her father is a German man:
- Los Angeles Times, 1988 - May's French mother is an art teacher. Her German father runs a construction company.
- The Independent, 2006 - May's German father, and her continued lack of contact with him, is a subject she won't broach.
- The Times, 2010 - May’s mother was a French art teacher who had separated from her German father and had no further contact with him.
I'd be leery of using TV Guide as a source for her name when it incorrectly states her father is Malcolm McLaren. And out of the dozens of obits in music magazines and newspapers, some of them quite extensive with details, that I read about Malcolm McLaren, Johdi May, Johdi Edwards and Jocelyn Hakim is never mentioned. And an exhaustive search via The Wikipedia Library returned zero results for Jodhi Tania Edwards or Jodhi Edwards. So since Edwards is a name she has never been known by or she has ever used her whole career, I'd leave it out. Isaidnoway (talk) 07:19, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- I also meant to point out that Jocelyn Hakim nor Jodhi May is mentioned in Malcolm McLarens article. Isaidnoway (talk) 07:31, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- And per WP:BLPPRIVACY - Wikipedia includes full names that have been widely published by reliable sources - and that isn't the case here, because the last name "Edwards" has not been widely published by reliable sources. Isaidnoway (talk) 15:39, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Isaidnoway That is a compelling policy-based reason. Are there any objections, then, to striking "Edwards" or related names from the article doe to them not having been widely published by reliable sources? —C.Fred (talk) 17:35, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- @C.Fred: No objections from me. I'd also remove the bit about her mother being previously married to McLaren, since that is not relevant to May, the subject of this BLP. I'll also try to beef up the referencing overall in the article, especially in the filmography section for her roles in films that have no WP article. Thanks. Isaidnoway (talk) 20:53, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- The weight of the sources lean towards excising the Edwards name and story behind it. Morbidthoughts (talk) 22:07, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you all for the thoughtful review and insights. No objections from me either, I agree that the “Edwards” surname and related narrative should be removed.
- Appreciate everyone’s work on this and happy to assist further if needed. KMWIKI2024 (talk) 09:45, 18 September 2024 (UTC)

- Based on discussion here, not only have I implemented option 3, removing the alleged birth name, but based on concerns about TV Guide as a source, I have removed her place of birth as well. —C.Fred (talk) 10:42, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
