back speach

[edit]

Ruggespraak (2001) ("Back Speach")

Could it not be "Black Speech"?

Beefart says: Nooooooooo..... Back talk it is :) :).... "Rug" in Afrikaans means back, of the anatomical variety: "He slapped me on the back". cf. Rucksack, meaning backpack. (Back as in "going back" is not the same word in Afrikaans. Here one uses "terug". Black, on the other hand, is "swart", as in the English swarthy or the tautological, Germanic Arnold Swartzennegger, meaning Arnold Blacknigger). The word 'rug' is not pronounced 'rug' as in the English "carpet". It is (approximately) rurx, where the x represents the ch in the Scottish pronunciation of loch. 'Speach' for 'Speech' is just yor efferyday spellink error... Captainbeefart 12:43, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ruggespraak literally comes close to "back talk" or "back speach", which in Afrikaans would probably be "rugspraak". but idiomatically ruggespraak means "to consult" or "to take counsel with". In the article on Hambidge as poet in transit in our book Beyond the threshold (Peter Lang 2007) we translated it as "Consultation".
