Nationality cats
[edit]Johnpacklambert, the main reference says Grassi's nationality is often confused in various sources. There's documentation that he was previously under Austrian consular jurisdiction but changed to French nationality in 1889, though he's commonly regarded by Thais as Italian. I understand that Expatriates in Foo categories are usually expected to act as container cats (even if they aren't tagged as so). So can we pick at least one? --Paul_012 (talk) 08:49, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- No. There are huge numbers of cases where there are not enough to justify a category, or where the origin is unclear, so that it is best just to say the person was an Expatriate in Foo and not to try and state definitively where they were from if it is unknown.John Pack Lambert (talk) 22:11, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- He was ethnically Italian. He was not a national of Italy. At the time in question "Austrian" actually means the Austrian Empire and then Austria-Hungary, which is a different thing from post-1918 Austria. We place people in expatriate categories based on the country they are expatriates from, so in this case he would go in either WlExpatriates from the Austrian Empire or Expateiates from Austria-Hungary. If the country changes while you are away, are you then an expatriate of the New country? Expatriate categories are not by ethnicity, but by country you are a national of. These are distinct although sometimes connected concepts.John Pack Lambert (talk) 22:15, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- So discounting the ethnicity, his nationality is still clearly documented, as outlined above. Why not categorise accordingly? I routinely see expatriate subcategories created with one member without being challenged. In any case, the article should be under at least one Fooian architects category (the expatriate architects cat doesn't count as it only serves to categorise members under Architecture in Thailand and is not part of the Architects tree). I don't really have an opinion preferring Austrian Empire or French or what, but there should be something there. --Paul_012 (talk) 01:08, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- There is a strong move against any Category under 5 articles anywhere. I added him to Architects from the Austrian Empire. It only has 3 articles but can be expanded. Many super small expatriate and emigrant categories have been upmerged. It is better to not create super small categories because they make navigation harder.John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:14, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
