Zarco's origins
[edit]Please 174.6.192.109, stop adding the speculations os Mascarenhas Barreto about Zarco being of Jewish origin (in fact his speculations that Columbus was a Portuguese Jew!). This author is isolated in saying this, this is a fringe theory not supported by anyone else, and the other supposed sources you present are not acceptable (2 local journals, a self-published site by a non-specialist, a "history" site with such blunders as not to be credible, since it also says that Bartolomeu Perestrelo was Jewish, when it is well known he was of non-Jewish Italian origin). João Gonçalves Zarco, who in fact never signed ZARCO in his life, but ZARGO (and afterwards Câmara) was a knight of the royal household, it was impossible for such a person to be Jewish! And I don't see what Alberto Dines has to do with all this, but anyway he is not a historian or a genealogist but a journalist, and as such not a credible published academic source on the subject. - Just because the word "zarco" may mean something in Hebrew that doesn't mean anything about it's uses in Portuguese. The Ogre (talk) 19:15, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Response
[edit]The Ogre, I would politely ask that you include more information then about this discussion in the article, since there are people that believe João Gonçalves Zarco is of Jewish origin and there are people who believe he is not. This can be a included as a discussion of his origins in the article. In that, you could even include the information you have about his signature, if you can cite a source for that. But the discussion exists, not only by one source, and it should not be erased.
Also, please explain why you believe Augusto Mascarenhas Barreto is not credible. He was published by McMillan, a well-known publishing company. As for Alberto Dines, he wrote a book in which he talks about the history of the Zarco family, among others. It is called "O Baú de Abravanel" and you can research it if you'd like. Alberto Dines is a highly respected journalist who has been a visiting professor at Columbia University.
Please do not simply erase what I have written as this is a wikipedia. Add your own information into the discussion instead. All sides should be heard. You did notice that I changed what I wrote to "possible Jewish Converso origin". ˜˜˜174.6.192.109
174.6.192.109 ˜˜˜The Ogre, I would add that I have looked at the history of this post and from the beginning there had been mention by other editors of Zarco's possible Jewish origin and you unilaterally erased this, without adding any new references to the reference list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.6.192.109 (talk) 02:05, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
