Style of play
[edit]There is almost nothing in this piece on the Connors style of play. I saw him live and recorded and recall tennis mags of the time talking about his flat, low balls which went against the trend of massive topspin. I also recall in I think The Year in Tennis 1978 there being something about him training only 2 hours a day. Some editor here is shutting me down on this stuff because he wants references and frankly I am at a loss. Any suggestions? I also need a reference for Connors taping his racquet head with lead tape, for th relative weakness of his serve, for his western forehand grip, and, as if it was not obvious, for the fact that they guy had a double-handed backhand. Thanks.
I started watching/following tennis in 1973/1974. I was at Forest Hills in 1974 when Connors won his 1st US Open and was at the 1978 Wimbledon mens final where Connors lost to Borg. I have seen Connors play dozens of times on TV and never once thought he used a western grip on his forehand (Rafa Nadal uses a western grip). This Wiki profile of Connors does mention his use of tape on his racquet under "Racquet evolution". I will go and look at video of Connors swing but think his forehand grip was an Eastern grip. Connors was known to hit a "flat" ball off both his forehand and backhand, although one can clearly see, at times, topspin on both sides.
Just want to let Wikipedia know about an error; in the opening paragraph about Connors, it is erroneously stated that Connors "retired in 1996". Elsewhere, you state that he got into the Tennis HOF in 1998. In fact, Connors retired in 1992 and was inducted into the Tennis HOF in 1998. The source is my wonderful tennis memory and your very own key of his playing career, listed near the bottom of this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:19D:C080:3D20:5169:F897:A70:3451 (talk) 18:55, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
Los Angeles Title record
[edit]This is part of a series of records pertaining to the Open Era but the 4 wins is recorded as being shared with Frank Parker (pre Open Era). Antipodenz (talk) 10:41, 25 September 2021 (UTC)
Racket
[edit]The racket he’s using in the top picture is a T1000. The T2000 had a brace connecting the two pieces of the handle. 98.186.89.245 (talk) 18:11, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
