Normandy landing
Without regard for his own safety, 1stLt Monteith he an assault over exposed beach to the cover a narrow ledge. Leaving cover he moved toward two tanks. Exposed to intense artillery and machine gun fire, he led them through a minefield and directed the tank fire, destroying several enemy positions. He then returned to his men and he led them in the capture of an advantageous position. Against vicious enemy counterattacks he repetitively crossed open terrain under heavy fire to strengthen his unit's defense until he was killed by enemy fire.
First name
[edit]Is it Jimmie or James? - Tronno ( t | c ) 14:44, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
I am sure it is James. When I was stationed in Germany (FRG at the time) there was a "Montieth Barracks". I cannot remember what unit(s) was(were) stationed there, or what city it was in. We called it "Montieth", and refered to it often.
It is Jimmie Waters Monteith Jr. according to his Social Security card, which is part of the Monteith collection in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Museum. It is also spelled that way in his high school annual (senior year 1937). I've written an article about him that will appear in the summer 2009 issue of Virginia Tech Magazine and will, I hope, dispel a lot of the misinformation out there about him.
