Year of the Dragon??

[edit]

The plot of Lost, the part that takes place on the island, takes place in 2004. When Jin buys the Panda in the future, the shop owner says it's the year of the dragon, which makes it 2012. How can this be? If that were the case, Sun couldn't be giving birth to the same baby she's pregnant with on the island. --Mithcoriel (talk) 00:12, 22 December 2009 (UTC) EDIT: Oh, I see. Jin's flashes were into the past. Talk about confusing. So it's safe to assume Jin dies sometime, or at least Sun thinks he did.--Mithcoriel (talk) 01:26, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Spoilers

[edit]

I think this page should be edited so as to make it more clear that there are spoilers blatantly put out in the one paragraph. I came on this page to see simply which cast were credited for the episode to have the whole episode ruined for me. 98.206.200.81 (talk) 02:10, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your dismay, but Wikipedia contains spoilers. Personally, I avoid articles for upcoming episodes of shows for a good week or two at least, until they've aired, just to be on the safe side. Radagast (talk) 03:11, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My possible contributions for this article

[edit]

I suspect this article will be on the active side for the next few hours, so I'll put my observations here for now so as not to end up in an edit conflict situation. If anybody can find a spot for this stuff in the article, go for it. (Haven't read the article yet, some of this may be there already.)

  • Jin's flashbacks are set in 2000 or early 2001, the most recent year of the Dragon.
  • Sun's flashforwards must take place in mid-2005. (Duh, obvious, I know, but here it is anyway in case no one's said it yet.)
  • As in "Through the Looking Glass," cell phones provide a clue to the flash scenes' timeframe. As I was watching "TtLG" for the first time, I thought to myself, "that's an awfully small cell phone for 2004 or earlier" during the scene where Jack talks on his cell phone, but I still didn't put the clues together until the big reveal at the end. In "Ji Yeon," Jin's phone that gets run over is kind of primitive-looking for mid-2005, but again I missed the clue.
  • I don't really know, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the dialogue (and signage in the background) in all Jin's flashback scenes is in Chinese. Somebody out there knows. I'm too ignorant to tell the difference between Chinese and Korean. Are the flashbacks set in China?

Anyway, that's all I've got so far. If someone finds a spot for any of this, cool, if not, that's cool too.

Good observations, but I think stuff like that belongs more at Lostpedia than here. -- Scorpion0422 03:34, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't actually studied Korean or Chinese either, but I have studied Japanese, and as I've been listening Sun and Jin's dialogue throughout the series, I have noted significant similarities between the aesthetics of Japanese and Korean, which are in fact more closely related to each other than they are to any other languages, including Chinese. I've also heard lots of dialogue in Chinese films and noted how different it is from Japanese in aesthetic. Now, I said all of that to put my observation in context: I'm positive that Jin's dialogue was all in Korean. Watching it again (thanks, DVR), I observe that the intonation of all the dialogue is shaped according to the whole sentence as opposed to individual words as it would be in Chinese. Further, because I've studied Japanese, I know for a fact that the signs were not in Chinese. Add to that the fact that Daniel Dae Kim grew up in America speaking English, so he doesn't even speak fluent Korean any more -- so it's even less likely he'd be competent enough in Chinese to pull it off; it's for that same reason that Sayid is never portrayed as speaking Arabic: Naveen Andrews doesn't speak it. I'll leave it to an actual expert in either language to confirm, but I'd place the likelihood as extremely low if not negligible that Jin was speaking Chinese at any point in this episode. Tsunomaru (talk) 18:34, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just remembered that Jin pays for the panda in won. A quick check of Wikipedia reveals that the won is Korean currency, so I think we can be pretty sure that Jin's scenes are set in Korea and spoken in Korean. Never mind, I was wrong about the China idea. Thanks for your insights, Tsunomaru.
Your friend, Augustus Chip (talk) 21:08, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also don't know any Korean, but I know enough to recognize it being spoken, or in writing. This was most definitely all in Korean, not Chinese or Japanese. Just to confirm, as Tsunomaru seemed to be looking for. LordAmeth (talk) 23:44, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flashbacks vs Flashforwards

[edit]

I dont think that Jin going to the hospital was a flashback. I think it was a flashforward mostly because it doesn't add to the storyline at all if it was a flashback. 134.117.254.250 (talk) 18:49, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It adds to the story in showing what would have happened and how hard he would of tried if he had been around and setting up for the shocking gravestone.
There were a lot of clues to it being the past: year of dragon, mobile phone, it being a boy, etc. before he says he's only been married 2 months.
83.104.138.141 (talk) 21:10, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that Jin's flashback scenes don't actually add anything to the plot. The sole purpose of the flashbacks is to give us doubt as to whether Jin actually makes it off the island. They've been doing that increasingly since Through the Looking Glass -- tricking us by switching between flashbacks and flashforwards. In that episode, there was an unprecedented flashforward. Thereafter, the episodes of this season had either flashforwards about the Oceanic Six or flashbacks about the new characters. Then, in The Other Woman, the opening scene gave us impressions that it might be a flashforward indicating that Juliette makes it off -- but then it turned out to be the first flashback about an old character all season (not counting Desmond's episode, which was just altogether novel). Now, they've hit us with another first: a hybrid of flashfowards and flashbacks in one episode, both involving old characters. Even moreso than most shows, the writers of Lost really enjoy playing this game with us; the flashbacks with Jin, irrelevant to the current and future plot as they may be, were just a clever move to raise the game. Heavenly patience

[edit]

I'm gonna assume good faith on the translation, because the info can be verified. I will put it back in with a fact tag so that people know we need a source. MMetro (talk) 19:19, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As someone pointed out in the revert, do not put speculative information in. The enhanced episode said, "Flower of wisdom." MMetro (talk) 17:49, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oceanic Six?

[edit]

The actress that plays Sun has said we would learn the last of the Six in this eposide. Sun is confirmed as one so that makes five. If this revealed the last of the Six then is Aaron other member? Griffenflash (talk) 23:13, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure. In the February 29 podcast, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse implied that Aaron is not one of the six and said that it would be very clear who the six are at the end of "Ji Yeon" and if it wasn't, they would spell out who they are in the March ~21 podcast. –thedemonhog talkedits 23:38, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not 100% convinced that everyone involved with the production (producers, actors, ABC promo department, whoever writes the popups in the "enhanced" *cough*bullshit!*cough* episodes, etc.) is on exactly the same page as far as who is on that list. I'd argue that our best course of action is to continue to wait and see what develops, leaving Aaron out of our lists of the Oceanic Six until something appears in an episode that explicitly confirms that he is officially considered to be one of the six. I'm sure all will be made clear if we're patient. At least, I sure hope so!
Your friend, Augustus Chip (talk) 00:15, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah we'll wait. I thought he wasn't but then I think he was technically born on the island and is a person even if he's an infant. By the way why is Jin on the Oceanic Six section on the main character page? Griffenflash (talk) 01:03, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That has been reverted. –thedemonhog talkedits 02:06, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They also hinted in TV Guide for the week of the March 13 episode that it was deliberately left open whether Aaron counts as one of the Six.Lawikitejana (talk) 23:00, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nikki

[edit]

was it just me, or in the first few minutes of the show, when sun is watching the television and calls the emergency number. the tv show in the background is the one whick Nikki stared in —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.161.121.119 (talk) 02:47, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Synopsis

[edit]

Not sure how/where to work it in, but we should work into the synopsis (a) Jin going fishing and the discussion with Bernard and (b) Jin's reassurances to Sun that he forgives her, recognizes that the Jin she cheated on is not the same man he is now, and that he will never leave her. It was nicely confusing for me at first that the Jin storyline wasn't a flashforward, even after the reveal, as I thought he was somehow a survivor, had remarried, and wasn't discovered, making the "I will never leave you" line stand out. Only later did I finally begin to "get" the fantastic fakeout of a flashback combined with a flashforward. Lawikitejana (talk) 23:06, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good Article review

[edit]

After reviewing the article, I think that it is up to the Good Article standard. There are just some small issues that I think should be addressed before it becomes a good article

Lead section:

  • I think that the last two sentences of the lead section would be better placed on the end of the first paragraph.
  • "Before the premiere of the fourth season, the principal cast of Lost called "Ji Yeon" the most shocking of the first seven episodes." is sourced to Quick shoot to LA. That's a cool source, but as it is a personal blog, it probably isn't the most reliable. Could you find a better source?
  • "A subplot (set in the show's "present day" timeframe, i.e. late 2004) follows Sayid Jarrah" -- change to "a subplot set in the show's "present day" timeframe (late 2004) follows Sayid Jarrah"
  • Put the actor's names after their characters in the opening paragraph.

Plot section:

  • At the end of the first paragraph, could you add a few words explaining what the freighter Kahana is? Where is it, and how is it related to the island?
  • "while fishing with Bernard Nadler, the only other married man" -- is he the only married man on the island?
  • "He takes them into his cabin, and explains the reason that Charles Widmore (Alan Dale) is so intent on finding Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) is because faking a plane crash would require tremendous resources." -- could you clarify this; is Ben or Charles the person who faked the crash?

Production section:

  • "Several days before shooting, Daniel Dae Kim was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, prompting speculation about his future on the series, due to co-stars Michelle Rodriguez (Ana-Lucia Cortez), and Cynthia Watros(Libby) leaving Lost after DUI arrests." -- I would split this sentence in two.
  • "promised to answer the question in the episode's respective podcast" -- The source does not say anything about a podcast.

Reception section:

  • "However, in comparison, the TMZ.com" -- you don't need both "however" and "in comparison"

I'll put the article's GA nomination on hold for seven days so that the issues can be addressed. Please let me know if I can clarify anything. Bláthnaid 16:53, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Episode had 689,000 Australian viewers (one of whom was me!). [1] Not sure if/where it belongs in the article - sticking it here if it would be of any use. —97198 talk 04:48, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jin's Tombstone

[edit]

I dont know if someone has already stated it, but what is the translation on Jin's tombstone because its hinted at in the article but not elaborated on. If it does say that Jin died on the day of the crash then its lying and Sun etc are probably covering for Jin and any others left on the island which would explain why other people are still harrasing Hurly etc to find them. anyway be interested to know what it says on the tombstone thanks Johnny 4/24/08 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thebigbristolian (talkcontribs) 23:20, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Episode discussion

[edit]

I think this is the worst episode of "Lost" because of not being clear till the end what is flashback and what is flashforwardGevorg89 (talk) 06:50, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That was kind of the point of the episode, but Wikipedia is not a forum and you should not be surprised if someone removes this section. –thedemonhog talkedits 14:26, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

Please help me to understand how I must pronunciate "Zoё"? is it "zoyo"? I think so because the letter "ё" exists in the Russian alphabet is said "yo"Gevorg89 (talk) 06:53, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Having seen Grindhouse: Death Proof, it is just pronounced like "Zoe" (rhymes with Chloe). Also, please see Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Date autoformatting. Thanks, –thedemonhog talkedits 14:26, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Faking the plane crash

[edit]

I just watched the episode, and the exact lines Gault uses to explain to Sayid and Desmond are "The wreckage was obviously staged. Now can you imagine what kind of resources and manpower go into pulling off a feat of that magnitude? Faking the recovery of a plane crash? Putting 324 families through a grieving process based on a lie? But what's even more disturbing.. Where exactly does one come across 324 dead bodies? And that, Mr. Jarrah, Mr. Hume, is just one of the many reasons we want Benjamin Linus." So, it's apparent that Ben and 'the Others' were the one who staged the crash, right? I'm not totally sure, though. So, if someone could explain to me how it isn't Ben.. fine. Else I might change the plot outline in a couple of days or so. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.74.81.215 (talk) 18:29, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how far you are into the show but the issue is resolved in the season five episode, "The Variable". --Jackieboy87 (talk · contribs) 18:43, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, next episode clears it up. It is Widmore faking the crash after all. Thanks though, Jackieboy87. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.74.81.215 (talk) 23:03, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
