Independent October-December 1972
[edit]This tells us he became an independent in October 1972. Does anyone know the background to this? I suspect he lost preselction and resented his party, but I'm just guessing. Nothing on Google I can find about it. -- JackofOz 08:44, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- I found this Hansard excerpt [1] in which a subsequent member John Fahey giving what I assume was his maiden speech in the Federal Parliament, said "My first exposure to politics was in the seat of Macarthur during the 1972 federal election campaign. The first member for Macarthur, Jeff Bate, was not endorsed by the Liberal Party—after representing the party as the member for some 23 years. He ran as an Independent and, through the influence of some friends, I found myself as one of his campaign supporters. I later realised the wisdom of the Liberal Party’s preselectors when I took him on a pub crawl through Camden. He borrowed money from me before each of the four hotels. He told me that it would look bad in front of the customers if he didn’t take his turn with the shout." I guess we can't use it, but it sounds like my distant recollection of the guy.JQ 10:21, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for that very quick response, JQ. -- JackofOz 10:24, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
