Length dispute

[edit]

The article currently states:

While many sources including IMDb list the video's run time as 20 minutes, Bowie's website clocks in at 22 minutes. Shot on film at 24 frames per second, the film runs 22 minutes, but with conversion to 25 frame per second PAL video format, the pitch increases and the running time shortens to 20 minutes.

This can't be right. As the passage indicates more-or-less correctly, a film converted to PAL video will lose 4% of its running time because it goes from 24 frames a second to 25 frames a second. For example, a 100-minute film would be 96 minutes long on PAL video.

But a 22 minute film would not be only 20 minutes long on PAL video. If the film were exactly 22 minutes long, that would be 1320 seconds or 31,680 frames. Shown at 25 frames per second on PAL video, it would be 1267.2 seconds or 21 minutes, 7.2 seconds, not 20.

Or if the film were the minimum length it could be to round up to 22 minutes, that is 21 minutes 31 seconds, then it would be 1291 seconds or 30,984 frames. Shown at 25 frames per second on PAL video, it would be 1239.36 seconds, or 20 minutes, 39.36 seconds ... which would round up to 21 minutes.

So the numbers don't work. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 06:26, 1 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There's no source for any of the info about the conversion so I say we just pull it. The VHS itself says its running time is 20 minutes. I couldn't find anywhere on davidbowie.com that talks about "Jazzin' for Blue Jean" or its running length. 87Fan (talk) 14:48, 1 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
