Draft article

Hello! I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy work, I've drafted a new version of this Wikipedia article for United Talent Agency: User:EWChristine/Jay Sures.

Similar to the one for UTA co-president David Kramer, this article is short so I've created a more thorough overview of Mr. Sures' early life and education, career, and personal life. The content is straightforward, and Mr. Sures and United Talent Agency have reviewed this draft to make sure information is accurate.

As stated on my profile page, I've studied Wikipedia's editing guidelines, including COI, and will limit my edits to those I believe to be uncontroversial and otherwise solicit assistance via requests to volunteer editors.

@Patapsco913: Since you created this article, I wanted to reach out to see if you'd be willing to take a look at the proposed draft and copy over content. If you are not interested, I'll reach out to relevant WikiProjects and other editors. Thank you. EWChristine (talk) 13:28, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

@Penny75: Thank you for helping out. I am comfortable with your wording changes, but I noticed some problems with the markup for the citations, starting with the sentence: "Sures leads the agency's news, broadcast and television divisions…" I've identified 3 sections to fix, but I've provided the markup below so these should be easy to correct.
1. Would you mind removing the following:
Sures leads the agency's news, broadcast and television divisions,[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Littleton-3|[1]]] as well as the acquired [[Greater Talent Network]] speakers bureau.[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Variety-2|[2]]][[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Wyche-4|[3]]][[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Sun-7|[4]]]He began managing UTA's news and broadcast division after leading the agency's 2014 acquisition of [[N.S. Bienstock]].[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Variety-2|[2]]][[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Playbook-8|[5]]][[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Rose-9|[6]]]
Then replace with the following markup:
Sures leads the agency's news, broadcast and television divisions,<ref name=Littleton/> as well as the acquired [[Greater Talent Network]] speakers division.<ref name=Variety/><ref name=Wyche/><ref name=Sun/> He began managing UTA's news and broadcast division after leading the agency's 2014 acquisition of [[N.S. Bienstock]].<ref name=Variety/><ref name="Playbook">{{cite news|title=The Playbook Interview: Jay Sures|url=https://www.politico.com/story/2017/04/the-playbook-interview-jay-sures-236775|accessdate=February 2, 2018|work=[[Politico]]|publisher=[[Capitol News Company]]|date=April 1, 2017}}</ref><ref name=Rose>{{cite journal|title=UTA Acquires New York TV News Power Agency N.S. This would keep your preferred wording, but add the citations as proposed in the draft.
2. The same problem is seen in the "Personal life" section. Would you mind removing the following markup:
Sures is a political activist and a longtime supporter of the [[Democratic Party (United States)|Democratic Party]].<ref name="Playbook">{{cite news|url=https://www.politico.com/story/2017/04/the-playbook-interview-jay-sures-236775|title=The Playbook Interview: Jay Sures|date=April 1, 2017|work=[[Politico]]|accessdate=February 2, 2018|publisher=[[Capitol News Company]]}}</ref><ref name=Malone/> In 2016, he hosted a fundraiser for Senator [[Tim Kaine]], then [[Hillary Clinton]]'s selection for [[Democratic Party vice presidential candidate selection, 2016|vice president]] in the [[United States presidential election, 2016|U.S. presidential election]].Earlier in the race, he had supported [[Joe Biden]].He pledged his support for Democratic candidate [[Gavin Newsom]] in California's 2018 gubernatorial race.[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Newsom-21|[5]]]
Then replacing with the following markup:
Sures is a political activist and a longtime supporter of the [[Democratic Party (United States)|Democratic Party]].<ref name=Playbook/><ref name=Malone/> In 2016, he hosted a fundraiser for Senator [[Tim Kaine]], then [[Hillary Clinton]]'s selection for [[Democratic Party vice presidential candidate selection, 2016|vice president]] in the [[United States presidential election, 2016|U.S. presidential election]].<ref>{{cite news|title=Tim Kaine headlining fundraiser at Eva Longoria's home|url=https://www.dailynews.com/2016/09/15/tim-kaine-headlining-fundraiser-at-eva-longorias-home/|accessdate=February 5, 2018|work=[[Los Angeles Daily News]]|date=September 15, 2016|publisher=Digital First Media}}</ref><ref name="Kaine">{{cite news|title=Tim Kaine to Begin 2-Day Fundraising Swing Through Los Angeles|url=http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2016/09/19/tim-kaine-to-begin-2-day-fundraising-swing-through-los-angeles/|accessdate=February 2, 2018|publisher=[[KCAL-TV]]|date=September 19, 2016}}</ref> Earlier in the race, he had supported [[Joe Biden]].<ref name="Chalfant">{{cite news|last1=Chalfant|first1=Morgan|title=George Clooney Considering Backing Biden Over Hillary Clinton, Hollywood Sources Say|url=http://freebeacon.com/politics/george-clooney-considering-backing-biden-over-hillary-clinton-hollywood-sources-say/|accessdate=February 5, 2018|work=[[The Washington Free Beacon]]|date=September 22, 2015}}</ref><ref name="Johnson">{{cite journal|last1=Johnson|first1=Ted|title=Hollywood Donors Weigh a Hillary Clinton vs. Joseph Biden Race|journal=Variety|date=September 25, 2015|url=http://variety.com/2015/biz/news/hillary-clinton-joe-biden-hollywood-donors-1201602684/|accessdate=February 5, 2018}}</ref> He pledged his support for Democratic candidate [[Gavin Newsom]] in California's 2018 gubernatorial race.<ref name="Newsom">{{cite journal |last1=Johnson |first1=Ted |title=UTA's D.C. Again, I believe this keeps your preferred wording but returns sourcing.
3. Finally, would you mind removing the following markup:
Sures joined the [[Entertainment Industry Foundation]]'s [[board of directors]] in 2008.[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-Kivel-22|[22]]] He currently serves as co-vice chair on the [[Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center]]'s board,[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-24|[24]]][[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-25|[25]]] and received the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Foundation's Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award in 2007.[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-26|[26]]] In 2014, Sures was honored at Chrysalis' annual Butterfly Ball, which recognizes entertainment professionals for their "creative excellence and philanthropic endeavors".[[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-27|[27]]][[User:EWChristine/Jay Sures#cite note-28|[28]]]
Then replacing with the following markup:
Sures joined the [[Entertainment Industry Foundation]]'s [[board of directors]] in 2008.<ref name="Kivel">{{cite journal|last1=Kivel|first1=Matthew|title=EIF organization announces board|journal=Variety|date=July 17, 2008|url=http://variety.com/2008/scene/markets-festivals/eif-organization-announces-board-1117989099/|accessdate=February 5, 2018}}</ref> He currently serves as co-vice chair on the [[Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center]]'s board,<ref>Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center: * {{cite journal|title=Lea Michele, Darren Criss Help Raise $700,000 for UCLA Cancer Center|journal=The Hollywood Reporter|date=April 26, 2014|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/fash-track/lea-michele-darren-criss-help-699169|accessdate=February 5, 2018}} * {{cite news|date=April 26, 2014|url=http://www.latimes.com/fashion/alltherage/la-ar-darren-criss-lea-michele-perform-at-taste-for-a-cure-fundraiser-20140426-story.html|work=[[Los Angeles Times]]|first=Ellen|last=Olivier|title=Darren Criss, Lea Michele perform at Taste for a Cure fundraiser|accessdate=February 5, 2018|publisher=[[Tronc]]|issn=0458-3035|oclc=3638237}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|title=Board of Directors|url=https://cancer.ucla.edu/giving/about-our-foundation/board-of-directors|publisher=[[Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center]]|accessdate=February 2, 2018}}</ref> and received the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Foundation's Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award in 2007.<ref>{{cite news |title=Toast of the valley |url=https://napavalleyregister.com/wine/toast-of-the-valley/article_a10fe606-3f7e-5338-aa1d-3169f3543803.html |accessdate=June 4, 2018 |work=[[Napa Valley Register]] |publisher=[[Lee Enterprises]] |date=July 7, 2007}}</ref> In 2014, Sures was honored at Chrysalis' annual Butterfly Ball, which recognizes entertainment professionals for their "creative excellence and philanthropic endeavors".<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Seikaly|first1=Andrea|title=Chrysalis Butterfly Ball Raises $1.4 Million-Plus to Help Homeless in L.A.|journal=Variety|date=June 8, 2014|url=http://variety.com/2014/scene/vpage/chrysalis-butterfly-ball-raises-1-4-million-plus-to-help-homeless-in-l-a-1201215890/|accessdate=March 26, 2018}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|title=Health Happenings—Memories in the Making Exhibition Features Works by Alzheimer's Patients, and More…|url=http://bhcourier.com/health-happenings-memories-in-the-making-exhibition-features-works-by-alzheimers-patients-and-more/|accessdate=March 26, 2018|work=[[The Beverly Hills Courier]]|date=May 31, 2016|issn=0892-645X}}</ref>
This keeps your preferred wording but returns the citations as proposed in the draft.
With these changes, I believe the citation problem should be resolved. Thanks again for taking a look at the draft, and for revisiting. EWChristine (talk) 19:27, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Hello! I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy work, I work with United Talent Agency. Patapsco913 I noticed that Jay Sures’ page was updated to include his marriage to Molly Isaksen. However, the two are no longer married. While there was no press coverage of their divorce, you can view the primary source court documents here. I am hoping you would be willing to remove the reference to their marriage in both the info box, as well as the sentence in the “Personal Life” section of his page.

I believe I've disclosed my conflict of interest appropriately. Thank you in advance for your help. EWChristine (talk) 21:33, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

We need to find a non-primary source for the divorce. Patapsco913 (talk) 23:38, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

Proposed Edit

I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy work, I work with United Talent Agency. This page was flagged in February 2018 as having a major contributor having a close connection with the subject. Jay Sures, the subject of the article, has not edited this page since August 2018 and the page has had edits in that time. @Penny75:, would you be willing to help? I would appreciate any guidance from editors. EWChristine (talk) 18:22, 30 March 2020 (UTC)EW Christine

You should use {{request edit}}. It's unlikely that anyone will see your requests otherwise. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 02:49, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy work, I work with United Talent Agency. I am hoping an editor will be willing to update Jay Sures’ page to reflect that he was reappointed to the UC Board of Regents this year by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The source for this can be found here. I appreciate any help from editors, as a COI editor I will not make these changes myself. EWChristine (talk) 15:36, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Update Personal Life Section

Hello! I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy, I work with United Talent Agency. I am hoping an editor would be willing to edit this page to accurately reflect Mr. Sures’ personal information. He has been married twice. In both cases, neither he nor his spouse drew public attention to their marriage and his marital status is not relevant to his public career. While there was no press coverage of either divorce, you can view the primary source court documents here and here. I will not make any changes to the page. Thank you. EWChristine (talk) 15:16, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Potential Edits

I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy, I work with United Talent Agency. I am hoping an editor would be willing to add Mr. Sures’ role in the contract negotiations between United Talent Agency and the Writer’s Guild of America. As a COI editor, I will not make any changes to the page. I would suggest the following language and secondary sources to be added to the career section of his entry:

Sures led contract negotiations between United Talent Agency and the Writers Guild of America. Focusing primarily on a practice known as packaging, the impasse resulted in a lawsuit and WGA members firing their agents. In May 2020 Sures reached out to WGA West president David A. Goodman to restart negotiations and after months of backchannel negotiations Sures announced the agreement United Talent Agency had come to with the Writer’s Guild, the first major talent agency to do so.

User: Patapsco913 or User: Penny75 perhaps you would be willing to help make this addition?

Edit Request: Personal Life

I work for Executive Writing, and as part of my consultancy, I work with United Talent Agency. I am hoping an editor will be willing to add Jay Sures' recent marriage to Linda Nyvltova to the personal life section of his page and the infobox. I am also requesting his children be added back to the personal life section now that we have provided appropriate sourcing (see below). In accordance with Wikipedia COI editor guidelines, I will not make these changes myself.</nowiki>

Suggested language: Sures married Linda Nyvltova in July 2023. He has three children from prior marriages - two with Anne Ward and one with Molly Isaksen.

Personal Life Edit

Hello, I am a consultant working with United Talent Agency. I posted a request asking an editor to add Jay Sures' marriage to Linda Nyvtlova and his three children to his Wikipedia page. I used Page Six/New York Post as the source, as this is the only secondary source available. The change was implemented by @Spintendo, but then reverted by @David Gerard. I went to the teahouse looking for further guidance and @Qcne responded that the post "can be used to source basic biographic facts, such as family life."  I'd appreciate further guidance on how to get these changes implemented. As a COI editor, I will not make these changes myself. Thank you. EWChristine (talk) 20:03, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

David Gerard's edit summary referred to WP:PAGESIX, which states that source as being generally unreliable. I admit I had not noticed this beforehand, or else I would have declined the request. There are numerous court cases searchable online which give the dates and names for the subject's marriage history, unfortunately, we can't use any of that either. The main question of whether Page Six should be used for simple details (like marriage dates and names) versus more complex details (which may have been the original focus of Page Six's determination of unreliability) are questions that go beyond the purview of this talk page. The only guidance for using deprecated sources states If the source contains material that cannot be found in more reliable sources, it may be valid to assume that the material in question is incorrect. The source may only be used when there is a demonstrable need to use it instead of other sources. As the only other sources are court documents (which confirm the Page Six information by the way) that exception might apply here, although to make the change stick, the reverting editor (David Gerard) would need to be consulted in order to approve that exception, and I doubt that will happen. Request for Update on Recent UC Regent News

Hello. I am a consultant working with United Talent Agency. I am hoping an editor can update Jay Sures’ page to include his recent action as a UC regent condemning the UC Ethnic Studies Faculty Council's request that the University of California retract its statement condemning the October 7 attack as “an act of terrorism.” I have provided suggested language and secondary sources below.

In October 2023, Sures in his role as a UC regent, publicly rebuked the UC Ethnic Studies Faculty Council request that UC leaders retract their statement declaring the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel “an act of terrorism…that deserves and requires our collective condemnation.” Sures expressed concern these faculty members were perpetuating hate and discrimination rather than advocating for “constructive paths to improve the situation for Israelis and Palestinians.” Weeks later the UC Regents committed $7 million to emergency mental health services, programs focused on better understanding antisemitism and Islamophobia, and training for faculty and staff on how to navigate their roles as educators.

Requested Update Re: Los Alamos Lab

Hello. I am a consultant working with United Talent Agency. I am hoping an editor will be willing to update Jay Sures’ page to include his recent appointment as chairman of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s board of directors.  I have provided suggested language and secondary sources below.

“In September 2023, Sures was named chairman of the board of Triad National Security, which manages the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He also serves on the board of governors that oversees the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Both labs are managed in part by the University of California.”
