The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Porompat, Imphal in the Capital town of Manipur State, India is an up-gradation of the Imphal East District Hospital having 100 indoor beds. By coincidence the erstwhile District Hospital was named as Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital (JN Hospital) in honour of the Late first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In the year, 2008, the Government of Manipur decided to to convert the JN Hospital. Till then there was only one Medical College in the State - Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). RIMS has got along History of changing Hands of Management, ultimately run by RIMS Society under the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare www.rims.edu.in. The RIMS Admits 100 M.B.B.S. STUDENTS per session and the home State, Manipur gets only 35 seats. In order to produce more doctors and improve health care in the state, the Government badly needed a state run medical college. However, the teaching faculty of the Doctors in RIMS gets almost double the salary of the Manipur Health Service Doctors. To circumvent the situation, the Government of Manipur decided to form a society under the name of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences Sciety, Porompat, Imphal and JNIMS Society under the Societies Act was registered on December 8, 2008.
