- I know it's wrong to edit other people's messages in a talk page, but I just tidied the above post by making them a list rather than a block of text. Because it's taboo to do that, I just wanted to flag that I did so. I'm not sure who originally posted the links. JapanOfGreenGables (talk) 05:45, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Should there be a separate page for Michelle Zauner versus Japanese Breakfast?
[edit]As the page grows and starts to include Michelle Zauner's other projects, like her memoir and the BUMPER ep, the page runs the risk of being more about her than it does Japanese Breakfast. Right now, that's not the case, and there isn't enough to have two separate pages, but I wanted to raise this point and begin the conversation. Maybe the page should be renamed Michelle Zauner and expanded accordingly? JapanOfGreenGables (talk) 13:14, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
- @JapanOfGreenGables: I agree with this proposal. I don't know how/when it would work though, since currently I don't think JBrekkie is quite at the point where it warrants its own entire page, but Michelle certainly has enough out there to warrant her own. But I also don't think renaming it as Michelle's page would work either, since many only know her as Japanese Breakfast. Maybe we should try to create a separate one just for Michelle and move much of the info (Crying in H Mart, BUMPER, etc.) from this page there? It would leave the JBrekkie page a bit blank, but I think it's better than just adding Michelle's stuff onto it when it really doesn't belong here. Shudsky (talk) 03:18, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Shudsky: Unfortunately, I don't have time to spear head this right now. But, my thoughts are, I think the page should be titled Michelle Zauner. Initially, I would have said that it should say something like "Michelle Zauner is an American musician who performs under the name Japanese Breakfast," and then have it link to the page if you searched Japanese Breakfast. The problem is that, I've noticed in recent interviews, she very much speaks of Japanese Breakfast now as a band, rather than a solo project. I think that's probably accurate, too. While she's still the primary song writer, it seems like Craig Hendrix (who plays drums) is very much involved in the song-crafting process. And probably the other members of the band are very involved in the recording process as a whole. Which is all to say, I don't think we should reduce Japanese Breakfast to just Michelle -- at least not anymore. And that brings us back to the problem you mentioned, and I don't have an answer to this. My thoughts are it's something that the people at the wikiprojects for music (is there an indie music wiki project) and biographies should be involved, or at least consulted. The people for biography might have a better sense of if a page dedicated to Michelle is warranted or not, and the people at music might have an idea as to how to split it up, or if a page that just kind of details the history of Japanese Breakfast, along with the albums, would be warranted. Like I said, I'm too swamped with stuff to take on that project myself. But if you wanted to (or if anyone else does), you have my blessing and won't be stepping on my toes or anything. :) JapanOfGreenGables (talk) 05:43, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- I guess there is a wiki project for women in music, so that's who to consult on the music end! JapanOfGreenGables (talk) 05:46, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
With Crying In H Mart, its movie adaptation in development, BUMPER, and Zauner's music video filmography, it would make sense for her to have a separate page from Japanese Breakfast at this point. Memories of (talk) 22:26, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
If we decide Zauner is notable enough outside of Japanese Breakfast to warrant a separate page, then we need to figure out how to go about making this page into two separate ones, due to the amount of information on it about both Zauner as an individual and Japanese Breakfast as a project/band. An example for how to write Zauner's individual page would be the page for Gerard Way, who is both a musician that is part of a larger group and a writer. Memories of (talk) 04:49, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
I'm not 100% sure how the article-creation process works, but I've been thinking a bit about this and I think it would probably work best if we left the current page as Japanese Breakfast and created a separate one just for Zauner. As it stands, the page is pretty evenly split it terms of what is Japanese Breakfast and what is Zauner-specific, so just to make it easier I think we should leave this one as is, create a draft page just for Zauner, and start on that. Then we can remove everything more Zauner-specific from this page. I'll get started on the Zauner draft. Shudsky (talk) 05:34, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- The draft for Michelle Zauner has been created. Once we've fleshed it out, it's just a matter of publishing it (and getting rid of the redirect on the current Michelle Zauner page) and editing the Japanese Breakfast page. Shudsky (talk) 05:44, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Also just adding that once we've made the Michelle page, we might as well go ahead and treat Japanese Breakfast as a full band, meaning we should add a "members" list with Michelle Zauner (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Peter Bradley (guitar, keyboards), Deven Craige (bass), and Craig Hendrix (drums, backup vocals). Shudsky (talk) 07:33, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Just added the band members section, I also edited the summary to put more emphasis on Jbrekkie being a band while still focusing on Zauner since the draft has not been approved yet. Memories of (talk) 09:03, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Where did the Jubilee album page go? It just refers to her discography.

New Image
[edit]Just as a heads up - I've changed the image once again since we are in the middle of creating a Michelle Zauner page, so it would be a good idea to have different images for them. I've chosen a more band-like one for this page, so the Michelle Zauner page should have a more face-focused photo (as it currently has in the draft). Shudsky (talk) 07:29, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
Proposed merge of Draft:Michelle Zauner into Japanese Breakfast
[edit]This article was nominated for merging with Draft:Michelle Zauner on 21 June 2021. The result of the discussion was to merge. |
- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was to merge Draft:Michelle Zauner into Japanese Breakfast, but rename the Japanese Breakfast page as Michelle Zauner. Shudsky (talk) 18:44, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Draft contains additional information. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:12, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- If the draft contains additional information about Zauner specifically that is not on the Japanese Breakfast page, doesn't that mean it would make sense for her to have her own article? Memories of (talk) 17:46, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- We were leaving the Japanese Breakfast page as-is until the Michelle Zauner one was accepted so that we wouldn't be removing info on an already published page. Obviously, right now the two pages contain very similar info, but that's because there's quite a bit of Michelle-specific stuff on the Japanese Breakfast page which we were going to remove if the Zauner page was accepted. Shudsky (talk) 17:52, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Support merge, but with Michelle Zauner becoming the primary topic, and Japanese Breakfast redirecting to her. The article, as it currently exists, is really muddled, and keeping them separate seems (until JB is larger) like an unnecessary fork. — ImaginesTigers (talk) 19:32, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- Support merge, we should rename the page and add a redirect from Japanese Breakfast like ImaginesTigers suggested. Then the page can be re-organized based on the draft to include Zauner's ventures outside of Japanese Breakfast, which would make it less muddled. Memories of (talk) 19:34, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- Support merge, I agree with both the above wikipedians. BestSince1996 (talk)
- Support merge, but only if the name is changed to Michelle Zauner. Otherwise, it would be really confusing. But absolutely, if Michelle Zauner/Japanese Breakfast aren't each big enough to get their own pages, it would make much more sense to have its primary focus on Zauner, considering all of the things she has done outside of Japanese Breakfast. Shudsky (talk) 21:12, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
Requested move 22 June 2021
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: no consensus. While there seems to have been sufficient consensus to move in the above merging discussion, this RM discussion has failed to yield consensus, with both sides having provided equally sound reasoning. Though there is no consensus to move, there may be sufficient consensus to split; so one of the participants might want to consider WP:PROSPLIT. Japanese Breakfast → Michelle Zauner – A second page just for Michelle Zauner was proposed, but it was declined and a merge was proposed. A consensus was reached (see Talk:Japanese Breakfast) that the Draft:Michelle Zauner page be merged into the Japanese Breakfast page, with the stipulation that the Japanese Breakfast page be renamed Michelle Zauner, with a redirect from Japanese Breakfast to Michelle Zauner (instead of the other way around, which is how it currently is). Shudsky (talk) 04:36, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
- Comment How is it that Little Big League (band) is article-worthy, but Japanese Breakfast isn't? I see that the merge proposal was unanimous, but I disagree. 162 etc. (talk) 14:57, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose- Zauner still performs under the band name Japanese Breakfast, with a release as recent as this year. 69.113.221.135 (talk) 14:18, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
- This move discussion is not about whether or not she still performs under the given moniker. Οἶδα (talk) 20:00, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose The merge discussion above was misguided. Thanks to her memoir (and now potential film adaption), I believe Zauner is now independently notable and deserves her own article. But even if you disagree, moving this page away from "Japanese Breakfast"—which is clearly the best-known name for the musical output described here—makes little sense. Conifer (talk) 21:30, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
- For what it's worth, the crux of the issue here seems to be whether "Japanese Breakfast" is a band headed by Zauner or a moniker for Zauner herself. In press coverage of the latest album, usage has been roughly split: articles where "Japanese Breakfast" refers to Zauner [1] [2] vs. articles where it refers to her band [3] [4]. Some even switch between the two forms from the headline to the body. I think the most elegant solution would be to separate Zauner's biography, pre-2013 musical career, and non-music projects into a separate article, similar to Tame Impala/Kevin Parker, but if consensus is against that, "Japanese Breakfast" is still the common name for Zauner's career taken as a whole. Redirecting everything to "Michelle Zauner" would surprise readers—not what we want. Conifer (talk) 21:35, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose Add a page for her personally if you desire but merging is irrational based on the popular artist name being used on streaming services like Spotify and the citations laregly referencing the name Japanese Breakfast. Virtually the entire references section uses the name Japanese Breakfast so I'm confused of the motive of this suggestion. Voyagingtalk 06:03, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- Undecided As mentioned by Conifer, different sources conflict on whether Japanese Breakfast is Zauner's solo project or a band. Until there is more of a distinction, it might be best to leave the page as is for now and come back to this later. Memories of (talk) 07:10, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose Zauner deserves her own page to cover her own biography, her writing/potential film adaptation, her other recorded output as a member of Little Big League and BUMPER, and then as leader of Japanese Breakfast (whether it's a band or solo project she leads it). Anything not directly related to Japanese Breakfast should be removed from this page and put in a page for Michelle Zauner. It seems just one person decided the separate Zauner page was unnecessary but more here and in the previous discussion agree on a need for separate pages. Lewishhh (talk) 11:34, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
- Support or split. The article contains a lot of info that doesn't belong to Japanese Breakfast, be it personal or professional outside Japanese Breakfast. Vpab15 (talk) 10:12, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Band, or musical project of Michelle Zauner's?
[edit]Hi, I noticed that Pitchfork describes Japanese Breakfast as the indie pop solo project of singer-songwriter Michelle Zauner
[5], in line with how our article on for example Tame Impala is written: Tame Impala is the psychedelic music project of Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker... As a touring act, Tame Impala consists of...
This seems to agree with her instagram too, where she has "Musician/band" listed after "Japanese Breakfast". However, for example NPR said that Zauner is the singer and creative driver of Japanese Breakfast
[6]. So... which is it? Our article seems to go with something more in line with NPR's description (she is a singer in the band) than Pitchfork's (she is the band), but I'm not sure which is correct. Endwise (talk) 06:35, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Instruments
[edit]Why not add the names of the instruments each of the band members plays? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 04:17, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
Band name
[edit]In order to help this article be more properly encyclopedic, why not add the basic information of how this band got its name? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 01:55, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
Merging Little Big League (band)
