There is an alert at the top of the page that says: This article relies too much on references to primary sources. (July 2019) so I have tried to include citations to online secondary sources. I'm still learning how to edit so please do feel free to change if I haven't added them correctly - and sorry if I have made any mistakes!~~Midwich Cuckoo~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Midwich Cuckoo (talk • contribs) 14:17, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
-06.09.19-~~Midwich Cuckoo~~ Have removed maintenance template as I believe I have addressed the issues it highlighted regarding use of only primary source refs and inline citations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Midwich Cuckoo (talk • contribs) 11:20, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for finding those all of those references! I concur – I think you did an excellent job addressing the maintenance tags. I went through them and added missing info (to help combat WP:LINKROT). I also deleted/moved several:
The Ravelry references are primary sources. I moved one to a new "External links" section (so that potential readers are able to find some of her designs), but I deleted the other.
The "Academia" link points to a placeholder page – the article doesn't seem to be accessible there. However, I believe that the appropriate full reference for that journal article is: Tarrant, Naomi (March 2016). "Mrs Jane Gaugain, Edinburgh's Celebrated Author of Knitting Manuals". The Scottish Genealogist, journal of the Scottish Genealogy Society. 63: 3–12. (taken from Kate Davies's "In the Steps of Jane Gaugain"). Without being able to verify the contents though, the journal reference can't be added yet.
The Yarnloop.com link only mentions Gaugain's name in passing, to say that she is included in The Knitter magazine issue (already referenced in the article).
The MET link is for a different book (not the 1940 book "Lady's Assistant in Knitting, Netting and Crochet" mentioned in the preceding sentence). This could be a potential candidate for the "External links" section, but since it provides no commentary on the item, I just deleted it.
One additional note: I removed the long refnames from most of the references, since the references aren't currently being used more than once. In general, when using refnames, try to keep them short and memorable (see here).
Thank you so much Heddles! I'm still learning so I thought I may have made some silly mistakes. I really appreciate the work you've done improving the entry and I'll know better next time I do references too. Thanks again! Midwich Cuckoo (talk) 13:40, 16 September 2019 (UTC)Midwich Cuckoo[reply]
