Patsy for the mob
[edit]in the book Roemer, William F. Jr. (1990) War of the Godfathers: The Bloody Confrontation Between the Chicago and New York Families for the Control of Las Vegas, New York : D.I. Fine, ISBN 1-55611-193-2
The author details how Byrne helped the mob
Substance
[edit]Some serious substance is needed about her term as mayor beyond just how she tried to promote her allies in the democratic political machine. She moved into Cabrini-Green for a while to call attention to crime, but everyone in Chicago already knew about crime. She called attention to gay rights, but what did she actually do for the gay community? What policies and programs did she enact to reduce crime, create jobs, fix schools, repair streets, build parks or improve housing? Did she balance budgets? None of that is here, instead we have the story about the race to save the climber. Of course, maybe this lack of any real substance is the truest statement of all about the mayor whose only real claim to fame seems to have been as a "snowstorm mayor."58.141.100.151 (talk) 12:58, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
Untitled
[edit]Any suggestions on what is needed in a clean up? TMS63112 15:30, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Looks like this article needs a POV check like this line that came from the article Her term was tumultuous. A product of the Daley machine, Byrne claimed to be a reformer , Im not sure though --Aranda 56) 01:48, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Gave the article a once-over to address some POV and style issues. Any objection to removing the POV tag? I think its pretty neutral now. TMS63112 18:11, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Now I knew that the dead voted in Chicago, but ...
[edit]... They endorsed candidates as well???
"She [Jane Byrne] ran one more major campaign, a failed bid in the 1988 Democratic Primary for Cook County Circuit Court Clerk. As part of a move to consolidate his power and reconcile with many white "machine" politicians [Harold] Washington [who died on November 25, 1987] endorsed Aurelia Pucinski, daughter of longtime Alderman Roman Pucinski who defeated Byrne in the primary and Vrdolyak -now a Republican- in the general election."
please, someone, fix this error on the Jane Byrne page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.157.11.146 (talk) 04:00, 10 January 2007 (UTC).
- It's not an error. Campaigning had begun before Washington's death, and Washington did endorse Puchinski. It's also worth noting that Washington and Byrne loathed each other. Jhobson1 (talk) 13:43, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Not the first female mayor
[edit]Seattle was the first major city to have a female mayor, Bertha Knight Landes (served 1926-1928).— Preceding unsigned comment added by Iamnotcapableofthis (talk • contribs) 20:14, July 24, 2021 (UTC)
- I've removed this information per the sources found at List of first women mayors in the United States. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:33, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- No, the statement is sourced and your removal is both original research and statistically false, nor does that Wikipedia article state otherwise. Seattle in the 1920s was small compared to Chicago in both the 1920s and in the 1970s, and has never even been top ten in American history. Alanscottwalker (talk) 13:45, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Vandalism?
[edit]Just trying to read this for research but there are a ton of nonsensical sentences about "the machine"?? Leahbier7 (talk) 04:10, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
