Name?

[edit]

Also some mix forms. -- Matthead  Discuß   00:36, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • John is the standard English forename. I see no indication that Jan is more popular in English for this guy than German Johann let alone English John. If the article is right that he came from a family called the Schillings, and from a Germanised area, I'd expect the guy was probably an ethnic German. Is this wrong? If he is not clearly a Slav then we shouldn't push any POV over usage, and the article should be at John of Glogow or some such variant. Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 14:45, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There have been many Poles with German names, just as there have been many Germans with Polish names. Moreover, this person did not use the surname "Schilling." Nihil novi (talk) 17:55, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, but that's hardly a good argument that he was an ethnic Slav. If there's a presumption that being born in a territory now Polish, makes one an ethnic Slav (let alone an ethnic Pole), then that's wrong. A guy with his economic background from that region, is probably at least partly German and probably fully Germanised. He can be Polish too of course, but if he's not obviously a primary speaker of a Slavic dialect, then I don't see the necessity for Polonizing his name (when it contradicts English usage). Let me be clear though, I think Slavs from territory now in Poland (whether they were Poles, Silesians, Pommeranians and so on), should have their names Polonised, but is anyone claiming he is one of these guys? :) Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 20:03, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
