Jan afghan
We have to rename this page
[edit]The name جان as it's used in this article is not an Arabic word, but Persian. The translations 'dear' and 'beloved' belong to the Persian word. The examples listed are all Afghan, Indian, or Pakistani, but nobody Arab. It is very strange how this Persian name is being presented as Arabic.
There are Arabic homographs of this word that are not related and have completely different meanings: جانٍ 'perpetrator of crime' (from the root ج ن ي) and جانّ plural form of 'jinn' (from the root ج ن ن). So unless someone is a criminal gang of jinn, please don't make his name out to be Arabic.
This article has to be renamed "Jan (Persian name)", the Arabic categories and WikiProject removed, and the categories "Afghan names" and "Urdu names" added for accuracy. Johanna-Hypatia (talk) 15:59, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
- Waited for a response; now I'm going ahead and making the changes I've proposed. Johanna-Hypatia (talk) 12:31, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Surname?
[edit]I have to question whether Jan can be properly called a surname. It serves as an added element in given names, and it occurs as the last element in some of the listed examples (again, as only an adjunct to the basic name), but as a standalone surname I don't see any examples.
