Should be its own article instead of just based off Hbomberguy

[edit]

Appears this guy started drama with multiple youtubers, including Todd in the Shadows and others. Should be made into its own article to keep track of the info. Sawerchessread (talk) 22:26, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, created this

[edit]

Decided to create this as additional information comes out about this. Feels as though this is evolving to be larger than the Hbomberman videoessay at this point.

Jessie Genders has her own claims about James creating drama when he claimed that Nebula was not queer friendly (and possibly calling police on her?)

There is an ace couple on YouTube who are claiming James misrepresented ace folks and has created acephobic content.

As both are YouTube essays and I cannot find news sources yet, I am inclined to just say "others have come forth with accusations" Sawerchessread (talk) 23:09, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is all going to be very hard to cover well because YouTube videos are not Reliable Sources and we can't use them to source statements in Wikipedia's voice, even if we have no reason to doubt what they say. DanielRigal (talk) 01:23, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I think I agree. Regardless, someone has removed the sentence about other allegations. If it ever comes up again, it can be added back in! :D
Thank you! Sawerchessread (talk) 00:16, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted apology

[edit]

Should we be linking to the third party reupload of the deleted apology video? The reuploader is very unlikely to have copyright and we probably shouldn't link to copyright violating material. DanielRigal (talk) 01:33, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ah did not think of that. thank you! Sawerchessread (talk) 02:28, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(Un)reliability of Sportskeeda

[edit]

Just to note that Sportskeeda is considered a generally unreliable source on WP: See here and here. Not tagging the source as the claims don't seem to be too exceptional, but this page as a biography of a living person (BLP) will still have to follow Wikipedia's BLP policies.

(Noting on the talk page as this article may attract some newbie editors who I don't want to see bitten) GnocchiFan (talk) 11:45, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality

[edit]

"Revelations" is not a good word choice in the last sentence "He lost ... subscribers ... within a month of the revelations." These are more claims, allegations, accusations, something like that. -- 2003:C9:4737:5000:F140:A653:8146:FCF7 (talk) 16:34, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

id argue that its false balance to not say revelation, in the face of rather incontrovertible evidence. i suppose it depends on perspective tho
nbc news uses the terminology “accusation”. polygon and vulture sources take the plagiarism as a matter of fact. if there is ever a proper james somerton apology that actually acknowledges plagiarism then i think we def should fix it tho homo momo (talk) 20:27, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

I'm not sure this YouTuber has long term notability. Literally 100% of the sources are from after other YouTubers made plagiarism accusations about him, lending a whole WP:BLP1E air to the proceedings. I couldn't immediately find any reliable sources about James Somerton that predate the accusations. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 22:32, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Valuable piece of internet history

[edit]

James Somerton has become a pretty controversial figure practically overnight, with only mild mummerings over the years. There are a lot of articles that cover much less, content/drama wise. I think it could stay up due to the fact he copied from several different authors, made false claims/had beef with several different personalities. The Hbomber video went in depth and has clear traceable sources outlined. If there was like a transcript or article(s) with said info that could be used along with the sources, would that be considered useable? KayFillet (talk) 05:16, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To a future reader wondering about a May 2024 pageviews spike

[edit]

In addition to a new development on the Somerton situation, a post by prokopetz on Tumblr[a] alluding to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/James Somerton is making the rounds. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 16:58, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ "their decision on how to handle the James Somerton situation was to...redirect to a brief writeup of Hbomberguy's plagiarism investigation – well, like I said, this may not be a good decision, but in context it's an extremely funny one." (bold original)
