Death date?

[edit]

The article currently states that he died on 11 January 1805 - however his gravestone gives the date as 10 January 1805. Which one is right? Mike Peel (talk) 20:24, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is interesting is that the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774-1949, mentions both January 10 and January 11 as the dates of his death. On page 81 it mentions January 10, but on page 1221 it mentions January 11. But I would assume as his cenotaph says January 10, for that to be the correct date.

The National Intelligencer and Washington Advertiser mentions his death in the January 14, 1805 issue. On January 11, the following occurred.
"Mr. Winston informed the House of the death of his colleague, Col. James Gillespie, from North Carolina ; where-upon,
A committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs. Alexander, Winston, Holland, Wynns, Dickson, and Winn, to supervise the funeral ; and
It was unanimously resolved that the house would attend the funeral ; and that they will testify their respect for the deceased by wearing crape on the left arm for one month."
"Friday, January 11". The National Intelligencer and Washington Advertiser. Chronicling America, Library of Congress. January 14, 1805. p. 2.
Unfortunately, it does not specify the date Gillespie died. If anyone is able to find other contemporary reports of his death or has any other information please reply or edit the article. Aneirinn (talk) 18:49, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
