Birth place

[edit]

The New York Times says 'Neward'. Ancestry.com says 'Essex County, New Jersey'. As Newark is the county seat of Essex County, NJ. I judge the birth place was Newark or thereabouts. Chemical Engineer (talk) 21:14, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability and details

[edit]

Though he is known for only one invention, it was named after him, and had a huge impact on industry and in fact history for facilitating lead in petrol. His invention, the Downs cell has 103 links. I suspect there is a lot more to his work, but there seems almost nothing about him and his life. Chemical Engineer (talk) 21:20, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
