"exercised"

The word seems to be a mistake. One might exercise an option, not a share. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.194.4.21 (talk) 09:38, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Bridge

It is not clear how many tournaments there were, one or two. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.194.4.21 (talk) 09:53, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Our current source (quoted below) features one two day 2008-08-14/15 tournament. It alludes generally to "hitting the bridge circuit" in 2007. ... -P64
There is no clear reference for the second tournament, that of 2008. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.149.223.218 (talk) 16:21, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
There is now clear evidence of the 2008 bridge tournament. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.41.51.240 (talk) 10:13, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
According to our currently referenced source for the paragraph, Kate Kelly WSJ 2008-03-14:
(quote) Last year, when he was still chief executive of Bear Stearns Cos., James Cayne took heat for hitting the bridge circuit during troubled times for his firm. ... [no details]
... Thursday and today, as Bear fought off a pending cash crisis that threatened to ruin its business, Mr. Cayne – who relinquished his CEO title in January and become the firm’s non-executive chairman – has been in Detroit, playing in the North American Bridge Championship.
... In the “Imp Pairs” event Thursday, Mr. Cayne and a partner placed fourth out of 130, according to figures from the American Contract Bridge League web site. (Bear shares fell 7%.) The playing took place between about 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the afternoon and 7:30 to 11 p.m. in the evening, say insiders ...
SUNDAY UPDATE: After finishing at No. 26 in the Imp Pairs event Friday, Mr. Cayne returned east. ...
"placed fourth" is a reporting error. Cayne and partner ranked fourth after Thursday first-day play in a two-day tournament ("event") now called the Lebhar IMP Pairs). They placed 26th over two days, Thu and Fri, four sessions evidently played about 13:00–16:30 and 19:30–23:00.
The 10-day "tournament" of July 2007 is a 10-day meet comprising numerous one- to seven-day competitions ("events") that are tournaments strictly speaking. Relying on [ref name=kelly2007] for concrete facts I have expanded our account and for clarity I have introduced the terms convention, competition, and episode in place of tournament and event, and event in the ordinary general sense.
As I depart, the word "event" does not appear and "tournament" appears only in the parenthetical explanation the 'convention ("tournament")'

Golf

Golf is also mentioned by the Wall Street Journal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.149.223.218 (talk) 13:43, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Jimmy's golf in business hours should be mentioned in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.139.112.229 (talk) 13:28, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
His golf also contributed to the world-wide credit crisis, still continuing, in some degree. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.139.112.229 (talk) 13:54, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Now I have mentioned 'golf' per [ref name=kelly2007] re Cayne's habitual practice in July 2007. --P64 (talk) 01:27, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Needs editing

I think once would be enough to say that Jimmy sold his stake in Bear Stearns for $61m. It's repeated and repeated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by I.Katie (talkcontribs) 08:02, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

I agree, that there is some repetition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.177.254.83 (talk) 14:20, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Now we say $61M once in the lead, presumably selected as a highlight of the biography, and once in section 1, evidently as the highlight of "various press reports" some of which are described. In the details we say 5.61M share @ $10.82.
We also say "losing about one billion" in the lead and report under Personal life 2005 "net worth of $900M" and 2008 "lost nearly 95% of his fortune".

James Cayne [tirade vs Timothy Geithner]

formerly "Jimmy Cayne On a Flipping Out On Treasury Secretary Geithner? -P64

Here is the link http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2009/03/04/bear-stearns-jimmy-caynes-profane-tirade-against-treasurys-geithner/ Not sure if it should be in the actual wiki page of james but its deff a talking point. ChesterTheWorm (talk) 05:16, 5 March 2009 (UTC) ChesterTheWorm

Geithner was President of the New York Fed at the time, not US Secretary Treasury. Our biography says, "In March 2008, he arranged the rescue and sale of Bear Stearns.[16][26]"
One thing that would be needed here is some explanation of the "discount window" that was opened.
Another thing needed here would be observation that Wall Street execs outside Bear Stearns:
(quote this new source)
Wall Street executives immediately appreciated the import of the Fed’s decision. “This is a five-vodka event,” one said. “Liquidity is no longer an issue.”
But, by and large, the Bear Stearns executives were furious. They had been lobbying the Fed for months to take this very action.
(end quote)
I will add that source to External links but cannot do more. As a first trivial step, I have added the banner {{WP Business}} above. --that may eventually yield an expert editor ...

Cayne smoking marijuana

I came to the Wikipedia Cayne bio page to read up on the details of the marijuana smoking allegations, but amazingly there isn't even a mention of it. This bio of Cayne is severely lacking. Makes one wonder what else is missing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.144.67.127 (talk) 00:57, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Since such information is controversial and possibly very damaging (especially for a high-level business leader) Wikipedia's requrements for reliable sources are particularly rigorous. See also WP:BLP. That may be the reason why you see nothing about this in the article. __meco (talk) 14:23, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
It was taken out on 20/6/2011 by Mckyj57, although it was fully sourced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.167.108.56 (talk) 13:47, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
The current section Drug use dates from 2012-05-27 (User:Malick78).
I have clarified the scope of Malick78's source, about the financial industry reputation, and added [ref name=kelly2007] that cites the contract bridge world.

I've added to this section allegations of cocaine use, based on this apparently reliable source:[1] Robofish (talk) 20:30, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
