"Mathematical Institute" unsourced
[edit]I just looked at the webpages of the ETH Zürich's math faculty and an affiliated research institute, and neither mentions Trachtenberg. I also did a quick Google search and found this question on Google Answer; it seems to me there is no mention of any institute founded by Trachtenberg on the web. Unless someone can provide a source for this statement, I'd like to remove it soon. -- Minvogt (talk) 10:13, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- From the preview of "The Trachtenberg Speed System" [1]: "In 1950, Trachtenberg founded the Mathematical Institute in Zurich, the only school of its kind. [...] Children ranging in age from seven to eighteen make up the daytime enrollment. But the evening classes are attended by hundreds of enthusiastic men and, women who have experienced the drudgery of learning arithmetic in the traditional manner. With a lifetime of boners back of them, they delight in the simplicity of the new method." Apparently, this Mathematical Institute was a private school which provided some math coaching for children and some adult education. --84.130.138.199 (talk) 12:03, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
I don’t like to edit directly because I make mistakes. I encourage someone to search for LIFE magazine May 17, 1963. It has an article and photo of Jakow. I’ll say that I know of at least two false photos circulating the internet. Oh by the way, LIFE Magazine fixes Trachtenberg’s death to 1950, not 53. I’m still a bit skeptical about this whole story. I still don’t know if there was a school in Zürich, and if there was, what happened to it, and how this stuff got to this Cutler lady an ocean away and ten years after his death. Nationality
[edit]I'm not sure Trachtenberg was Jewish. I think that is an assumption and you know what they say about assumptions-they make an ass out of you and me. Redding7 (talk) 00:14, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
I agree, there seems to be no credible citations regarding that fact... Perhaps the possible misconception is because of his surname? --58.175.16.21 (talk) 05:55, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
He was Ukrainian, not Russian. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.253.9.177 (talk) 08:06, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Critical of Nazi system?
[edit]How did you arrive at this statement? He was not critical of Nazi system as late as of 1933 and this to such account that he published on his own expenses some booklet in defence of reputation of new German authorities that was tarnished without any reason in all Jewish concerns. Booklet was published in 3 languages:German, French and English, so that all all educated mankind had a chance to read it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.226.95.16 (talk) 20:31, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
- Why was he interned in a concentration camp then? Meltingpot (talk) 08:16, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
