Surname
[edit]Try Google: Jagna Marczulajtis "rodzice pochodzili z Wilna". Article itself is no longer on Internet. So it seems, that both parents of Jagna's farther have some sort of connection to Lithuania. No one is claiming she is Lithuanian, but some readers might wonder about Jagnas surname and origins of it. Encyclopaedia Editing Dude 06:38, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
It's a strange and unusual "Polish" surname, but it's definitely not Portugese, or of Zulu origin. Dr. Dan 02:09, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- Definitely seems to hint some Lithuanian origin, probably of the father. (but also: WP:OR warning). --Lysytalk 19:43, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
Yes some, but just a tiny hint. Dr. Dan 00:57, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually I did find that article http://kobieta.gazeta.pl/wysokie-obcasy/1,53662,794733.html
Both parents of Jagna's father are from Vilnius. Encyclopaedia Editing Dude 22:58, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- Which means that most probably they were not of Lithuanian descent, as barely anyone from that town was Lithuanian. Being born in Vilna is not equal to having Lithuanian roots, Dude. Just like being born in Szczecin is not the same as being Pomeranian or Gothic. //Halibutt 02:23, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
And Hal, don't forget to mention that Marczulajtis is a typical, if not common surname in Polish, too. That should be of help to you here. Dr. Dan 02:47, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- So, Dr. Dan, do you believe that anyone in Poland with an uncommon name must be presumed to be non-Polish? (Oh well, there goes one half of my family, will have to start speaking Czech to them from now on). On a more serious note, if someone can find a quote by this young woman where she affirms some affinity with Lithuania, we can mention this. In the absence of that, this name-game is just silly. Balcer 02:57, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'll add that my mother's maiden name is clearly of GDL origin. While surely Slavic, it would no doubt be interpreted as one of those Lithuanian -čius names by our fellows here. //Halibutt 14:29, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Balcer, first of all, I'm not saying that Jagna isn't Polish. Secondly, many surnames from Poland have ethnic origins that are not Polish, like Chopin and Marczulajtis. Hopefully a little clearer now. Dr. Dan 13:29, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
