Jacques or Jean?
[edit]This page was originally at Jacques-François Amand, then moved to Jean-François Amand, and now moved back (by me) to Jacques-François. Although the French Wikipedia has it at Jean-François (but had it at Jacques-François for three years previously), all the reliable sources seem to give him as Jacques:
- The nearly contemporary Heinecken
- The slightly later French Gault
- Gazette Drouot International
- L'est-éclair
- Emanuel von Baeyer
- Piasa
- La tribune de l'art
- Some pdfs from e.g. the Metropolitan Museum (some other sources from the Met mention Jean-François though, so this one isn't definitive)
It seems to me that people assumed that JF Amand had to be Jean-François (which is much more common than Jacques-François as a first name), and that that error still circulates (e.g. on the French Wikipedia). None of the old sources give Jean-François though, and many of the recent ones still use Jacques-François, so I see no reason to assume that they are wrong. Fram (talk) 07:00, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
