Notability

[edit]

According to "WP:Notability (fiction)," "An element of fiction -- including but not limited to a character, location, object, or aspects of a work's mythos -- is presumed notable if it satisfies the general notability guideline" (emphasis added). The "general notability guideline" then linked to indicates that a subject is notable "if a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." This article on Jack Shaftoe joins other articles on major characters in this award-winning epic, the longest epic of the 21st century thus far and one that has been reviewed (mostly favorably) by hundreds of media outlets. Other articles related to this series include entries for Enoch Root and Eliza. Jack Shaftoe plays a more substantial role than Root in The Baroque Cycle and thus features far more prominently in the hundreds of reviews of the trilogy. By pure page-count Eliza may receive more attention than Shaftoe, but unquestionably Shaftoe, Eliza, and Daniel Waterhouse are the three primary characters in this epic and as such this article should not, as before, be merged with the entry for The Baroque Cycle. Unlike before, the article is now sourced, and if anyone has questions about the article let's improve and not summarily dismantle it. Postscript: It's worth noting, too, that Shaftoe is the named ancestor of three major characters in a separate work of fiction, equally well-received and widely reviewed (Cryptonomicon). This too militates for the entry being kept distinct from the series entry. Burks88 (talk) 22:33, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mudlarking as a criminal enterprise in the 17th century...

[edit]

It was not, despite this article's opening paragraph. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rtelkin (talkcontribs) 05:12, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
