Name
[edit]Does anyone have an informed opinion whether in the bridge world he is best known as Jack, John C.H., or J.C.H.? If so, is it clear or debateable? --P64 (talk) 21:04, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
- Definitely Jack. JH (talk page) 21:12, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
- Agreed, Jack. I've never heard him called anything else - and I'm English, and started taking the game seriously in 1970. Narky Blert (talk) 19:50, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Identity
[edit]Marx is not identified by the Library of Congress (no LCCN), hence not at WorldCat (no auto-generated homepage, as we link in the footer of most English-language writer biographies). Nor at VIAF (search 'marx, jack').
Direct catalogue searches evidently hit no records of works by Marx.
(At all three sites I tried multiple name forms but some doubts remain.)
He didn't write a book, we say, so this is no surprise. But twere no surprise if he were catalogued, either, for a secondary credit in one of the Acol books or for another publication. FWIW, at least one WorldCat library has catalogued The Spectator bridge columns by Susanna Gross (Talk:Susanna Gross#The Spectator).

Life
[edit]"He did not, however, have an equable temperament, and that limited his career as an international player.[citation needed]"
Does this add anything to the quote from Aces All in the next paragraph? The sentence strikes me as a candidate for removal; either that, or [citation needed] might be removed. Narky Blert (talk) 15:40, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
The Headmaster/Big Daddy Acol
[edit]This is a quotation from memory from (most likely) a bridge periodical (possibly IPBM, it has a flavour of Joe Amsbury about it). I feel certain of its accuracy, but can't locate it: there seems to have been no obit in IPBM. Narky Blert (talk) 19:50, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- I've definitely seen him called the Headmaster. JH (talk page) 20:56, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- Slept on it, woke up, found it at once! Narky Blert (talk) 10:32, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- That was a good find! I have that book, but would never have thought of looking there. JH (talk page) 17:17, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
