Not a brother of his Fitzroy team-mate

[edit]

The extended literature dutifully repeats the erroneous assertion — the very first appearance of which can not be identified — that two sets of brothers, Jack and Bill Dalton, and Jim and Mick Grace, played for Fitzroy in the 1898 VFL Grand Final. Although the assertion is true in the case of Jim and Mick Grace, Bill and Jack Dalton were not brothers (and, it would seem, were not even distantly related).

  • The two individuals concerned were born in the precisely same year (1876).
  • The two individuals concerned were born five weeks apart — Bill on 11 March, and Jack on 16 April — making it impossible for them to be "brothers".
  • They each had entirely different parents:
    • Bill was the son of William Dalton (1845-1914), and Anna Dalton (1853-1925), née Brophy.
    • Jack was the son of John James Dalton (1849-1890), and Margaret Dalton (1857-1902), née Manning.
  • Finally, this unfortunate mix-up may have been caused by the fact that "Bill Dalton" did, indeed, have an older brother "Jack": John Joseph "Jack" Dalton (1873-1943) (Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria Births Registration no.25309/1873). Lindsay658 (talk) 02:10, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Lindsay658,
I've also been looking into the history of Fitzroy footballers Jack and Bill Dalton and find that they were brothers and that they both played for Fitzroy from about 1896-1890. All of the contemporary newspaper items (Trove, the Australasian, Gossip etc. 1898, 1939, 1940) refer to the Dalton brothers.
Jack was the elder brother. Bill also refers to his brother Jack in a Trove interview with a journalist.
I think that the current Date/Place of Birth, Date of Death on Wikipedia for Jack Dalton is incorrect.
