Irish Names

I have reverted changes made per WP:IMOS regarding Derry, since "Londonderry" was the contemporary usage (1942), and is consistently referred to by that name throughout Broome's own books and reminiscences, and the official name for the naval establishment there (which Broome commanded briefly) was "H.M. Naval Base Londonderry". Broome made no comment on community relations or politics, his works dealt entirely with his own service and experiences. HLGallon 19:36, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Broome and Pound

Per page 393o of the November, 1917 issue of The Navy List, Broome was appointed to Colossus on 6 September, 1917. Per page 396n, Pound was appointed to the Operations Division of the Admiralty on 6 July. That's from the official published record. If Broome claimed that he served with Pound in Colossus, then he was wrong. --Simon Harley (Talk | Library). 20:44, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He did, but he did also say - this is from memory, but I have the book somewhere - "He was THE CAPTAIN, a blur of gold braid. I was a midshipman, the lowest form of sea life. Our paths never crossed." So he doesn't actually claim to have met or even seen him, and it's more than possible that on joining Colossus he was given an out-of-date list of officers that he never afterwards questioned. -= "paid off" =

The article says, "HMS Keppel was paid off late in 1942." But the Wikipedia article on HMS Keppel says "In early 1943 Keppel, now leading 3EG, returned to the Atlantic." Etc. Now I'm no expert and it is possible that Keppel was both paid off" in '42 and returned to action (with a new crew?) in 1943, but the sentence here is a bit misleading even if Broome's association with the ship ended with its being "paid off". If "paid off" has a Wikipedia article then maybe a link to it would clarify that "paid off" isn't as final as it sounds. Or perhaps something else can be done. 10:35, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
