Self-promotion

This article, whose virtually sole editor is the subject himself, suffered from extreme and extensive WP:NOTADVERTISING and WP:COI violations. The subject himself wrote self-promotional prose lacking citations, using WP:PEACOCK terms & claims. I also see now that a tag above reads "A page with this title has previously been deleted," meaning that this is not the first attempt at promoting a publisher and his company.

I use Spurlock's reference books while researching Wikipedia and journalistic articles; I find Vanguard a valuable resource. But given how many legitimate articles about publishers exist on Wikipedia, which could have been referenced and used as models, there is no excuse for such blatant self-promotion. I would strongly suggest that no one associated with Vanguard edit this article, nor meat-puppet friends. Wikipedia admins frown on such self-promotion, and can remove articles containing blatant policy violations. -- Tenebrae (talk) 20:44, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

I am J. David Spurlock. re Talk:J. David Spurlock, sorry, while Ive been editing for decades including Steranko, Neal Adams, Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, Peter Max, Infantino, etc., Im obviously new to Wikipedia. Just trying to correct and add references. I will shy away from that page, but I wanted to say, the details are easily verified. There is a fair bio on me in DC's SPIRIT ARCHIVES vol 24 which DC (inspired by my various Wally Wood books and my founding of the Wally Wood Scholarship Fund at the School of Visual Arts) hired me to author the introduction to. another good reference on J. David Spurlock is: [1] and: Comic Book Market Place no. 111 "In Praise of Great Men" article on j. david spurlock's career as an author and publisher working with comics' all time best artists. The bit of J. David Spurlock bibliography that is left on Wikipedia is actually my AUTHOR bibliography (I've published and edited many, many, more books than that). Most of that is easily verified via Amazon, B&N, etc. (though occasionally, I get listed as an editor of a book I actually authored). The awards are easily confirmed (5 or 6 Eisner nominations, Rondo Award for co-authoring the Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos book, Locus Award nomination on the RGK: Art of Roy G. Krenkel book and the Wally Wood, Wally's World biography...) Whether or not there is ever a page on Vanguard (I think there should be, as Vanguard holds THE registered trademark for publishing and only having the old, long-out-of-business Vanguard Press listed is misleading), Im in agreement that any page on me should cover my writing, illustration and work in support of artists (my work with Adams, Kubert, and Stan Lee on the Dina Babbitt matter, etc.) and not be a PR vehicle for Vanguard. Starting now to work on your page. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. aren't allowed as Wikipedia references since they're commercial sales sites. Similarly, the interview at World Famous Comics (link 7 above) is unusable since that same site sells your books, and so the interview is promotional in nature, and not a disinterested journalistic interview. -- Tenebrae (talk) 13:51, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm not having any luck finding any biographies of you or interviews with you online, not even at the Vanguard site. There are some capsule bios at convention sites, but convention bios are generally supplied by the subject are so are unusable.

I don't have the issue of Comic Book Marketplace article you mention, which might be the best source. Can you scan and OCR it, and post the results on this page? We can't keep it here, as that would be a copyright violation, but I think we can use this page as a means of transmission for a couple hours so that I can use the article as a basis with which to WP:VERIFY. In fact, the material up on the page now is unverified, and can't stay up unless we do get impartial, third-party WP:RS.

The DC SPIRIT Archives 24 has a good bio on me. Thanks — I'll look at these now. The terms "ed." and "compiler" I took off the book covers. You'll see you're listed as author for the Romita and Buscema books, for example, on the article page.

The John Buscema Sketchbook cover in the ERB article is different from the cover on my copy of the book. The former says "compiled and edited by J. David Spurlock" while the latter says "by J. David Spurlock and John Buscema."

If you own the rights to the photo of you and Frank Frazetta, and you grant permission, we could run a cropped image of you in a bio box in the top-right corner of your article. As well, assuming both rights and permission, we could run a a cropped image of Frazetta in the article Frank Frazetta. I'm thinking the photo here. Obviously, it'd be nice to get a younger shot of Frazetta, but Wikipedia can only use rights-cleared photos. Actually, since you've published a Frazetta book, you might have a photo that you could upload and clear copyright on, if you wanted to.

The files you uploaded were deleted, probably by a bot, since they weren't Wikipedia articles or talk pages. We can't really keep copyrighted material up -- that page from the Spirit book really ought to be taken down -- but if you can post that CBM article on this talk page for a couple of days, I'm sure I could cull biographical details. -- Tenebrae (talk) 01:08, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

I've added the CBM bio material, plus confirmations from a number of other sites. Because an unaffiliated editor (me) added the bulk of the material, I'm removing the COI tag. I have a copy of The Amazing World of Carmine Infantino and the cover reads "by Carmine Infantino with J. David Spurlock", just as we have it in the article.

We premiered the new Art of Neal ADams book and Stan and I did a panel for an audience of 4,600 people.
