[edit]This is my first article in the english section of Wikipedia - Please help when i do something not according to rules or costumns. Maybe also some spelling or grammar mistakes have to be corrected. Thank you Rembertbiemond (talk) 13:23, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Spelling of first name
[edit]I'm a bit surprised that the article name uses "ö" in the first name, since it would normally be "ø" in Norwegian. Did he really spell it like that, or is it just the spelling used by the German website? Favonian (talk) 13:57, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- According to this Norwegian source the correct spelling is "Jørgen". Favonian (talk) 14:05, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
Well You are right that he was born as Jørgen. I made a redirect from Jørgen aswell as from Joergen aswell as from Jorgen. In the english speaking world the ø is usaually transcribed as ö (books) even when the ö does not appear in the normal english alphabet. Sometimes people in the english speaking world also transcribe as o so Jorgen. What to do? Has fame however was mainly in german speaking countries. And there is the ö as he used himself always while living in Middle Europe. Further thoughts appriciated. I am pragmatic about this, in Norwegian the topic would defenitly be Jørgen. Rembertbiemond (talk) 14:47, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- I think we should keep it the way it is. According to WP:COMMONNAME the article should be named "using the most common English-language name of the person". This may of course seem a little irrelevant for a Norwegian-turned-Swiss, who is best known in the German-speaking world, but when I find English translations of his books using Google Books and the like, they seem to use "Jörgen" as the first name. So, though my Scandinavian heart bleeds, we keep the German spelling as the article name. Favonian (talk) 23:07, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- This opinion is also endorsed by the spelling in his passport which was Jørgen as long as he lived in Norway but was changed to Jörgen (by the Norwegian Amassady in Bern) when he lived in in Switzerland. Furthermore it makes sence since in the english speaking world almost nobody will have the ø on the keybord (it has to be created by copy and paste or similar excersise. Rembertbiemond (talk) 18:21, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- Because of the lack of ö an ø on english keybords the redirects Jorgen Smit and Joergen Smit are (i assume) ok.Rembertbiemond (talk) 07:51, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
- I made a footnote about the spelling of the first name - so now the ø appears in the article itself (in a footnote). A bow for all skandinavian hearts. Rembertbiemond (talk) 21:33, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
category norwegian writer
[edit]Jörgen Smit did write about 75 Articles in norwegian, more in his early years; but no books- so that qualifies maybe for the category Norwegian writer - however - At age 50 he moved to Sweden, at age 59 then to Switzerland. All of his books where published therafter. And in German in the first place. Then some of them where translated back into norwegian. What to do? I think he would consider himself eventually as a writer but not necessaraly a norwegian writer. Anybody an idea? Rembertbiemond (talk) 17:29, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
