Isla Margarita

[edit]

the introduction sounds like a tourist information...

If at some point this article sounded like tourist information, now it's more like a U.S. state department pamphlet.

Fact Check

[edit]

Population 420,000? Im not sure that is accurate. There is a permanent and a floating (seasonal) population. I am quite sure the permanent population is below the 420,000 mark.

With regards to Pampatar City, the centro comercial La Redoma and Centro Comercial AB are within the Porlamar city limits.

Hello there Regarding the city limits that is inacurate, both commercial centres are under the Pampatar juridiction, that is where they pay their taxes, that is where they belong to. The population is around 400 000 thousand last head count was 1998 then it was 377 000 people. It is a save bet that population has increased in the last 6 years. How much? Nobody knows.

Cleanup issues

[edit]
  • This article, as an anonymous poster has pointed out, reads like a tourist brochure and could benefit from some copyediting. Also, the text of the article needs some wikifying. Some of the external links look like they are only borderline relevant, but I'm not sure how to deal with that, as I suppose they could supply valuable info to someone. --@aron 01:25, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
cut this from article, it reads as a tourist brochure indeed
In close proximity with the mainland, approximately 19 Km. from the coast of Venezuela, enjoying a tropical climate and an average year round temperatute of approximately 27 C to 38 C.
People practice all most kinds of water sports, everything from a simple walk on the beach or a nice tan to discovering the underwater flora and fauna of the Caribbean, from sailing to rowing in a kayak. It is not a mistake to know some Spanish; few people speak fluent English.
Local fishermen pick up their nets at dusk and enjoy the spectacular show of light and color our island has to offer such as the colonial ruins or enjoy the duty free shops, offering the tourist the most prestigious and internationally renown brand names. Only a few Caribbean countries have such a variety of climates and landscapes. From Coral Reef Lagoons, the Amazones Rain Forest, the Plains and the Savannas, the Andes mountains and to one of the largest Delta in the world: Venezuela

Name

[edit]

My mother and my uncles are venezuelan (I am myself, but I've never been there), and they told me the island's name is Margarita, not Isla Margarita.

And it makes sense, since refering e.g. to Gran Canaria as Isla Gran Canaria, or to Tenerife as Isla Tenerife sounds really stupid.

Are there venezuelians that call it Isla Margarita?

Anyhow, is that the way English-speaking people refer to it (as Isla Margarita instead of Margarita Island, or Margarita, ...)? --euyyn 14:27, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Change of article name to Margarita Island

[edit]

This is English Wikipedia, and the name of this article definitely needs to be changed to Margarita Island instead of 'Isla Margarita'.
Because of this error, Margarita Island does not at the moment appear under disambiguation when searching 'Margarita'. This has to be rectified.
Also, the disambiguation issue which arises when searching 'Margarita Island' is easily resolved: Margarita Island appears first as Margitsziget -which is in fact Margaret Island in English, and NOT 'Margarita' Island.
Margarita Island must be searchable through 'Margarita'; and it's basic that the article name should be Margarita Island.
After all, we don't have 'Islas Galapagos' for the Galapagos in a way that is not searchable under 'Galapagos'!

Ok, I'll put the material here until a ref appears, anyway I'm not sure if this is notable enough for inclusion, it's just a project

On October 20, 2008, President Hugo Chavez says a big naval base will be built on Venezuela's largest island. Chavez says Margarita Island's strategic location off Venezuela's coast in the Caribbean Sea makes it perfect for "a naval base of large proportions." Chavez says a naval base there will help authorities fight drug trafficking.[1]

Isla MargaritaMargarita Island – This is the English Wikipedia, so we should use the English name. I don't understand why the title is "Isla Margarita" anyway, the correct Spanish name is "Isla de Margarita". nyuszika7h (talk) 12:24, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Nueva Esparta Map English.svg will be appearing as picture of the day on August 11, 2018. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2018-08-11. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 00:21, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Margarita Island
A map of Margarita Island, the largest island in the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta. Situated off the northeastern coast of the country, in the Caribbean Sea, it is the site of the state capital, La Asunción.
