I have deleted the unpunctuated phrase "He supported United" as I suspect a joke. In his youth there were not yet organised football clubs on Tyneside.Cloptonson (talk) 21:53, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Revert article to that of 2009?

[edit]

The above is perhaps not the only joke. Typical of Wikipedia, two mealy-mouthed flags have been added at the top of the article, implying that the article might be inaccurate, but without removing the inaccuracies. There is only one reference for this article, although many more could be cited. In early 2010, an unidentified contributor added a lot of text which is not in any way supported by that reference, or any other. Some statements were simply reversed - for example "Aspdin's product was not protected by an explicit patent" (which, by the way, is true), was replaced with "Aspdin's product was protected by an explicit patent". Now, of course, it's perfectly acceptable to reverse the sense of a key sentence if it is incorrect - provided that an authoritative reference is supplied. The fact that this blatant vandalism has gone unchallenged for ten years says a lot about Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.140.123.62 (talk) 09:07, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

11+100=110?

[edit]

The article says, In 1910 on his 100th birthday, but wouldn't that have been his 99th birthday if he was born in early 1811? I mean, I was born in 1980, and my 10th birthday was in 1990, not 1989. Perhaps it was an early celebration at the end of 1910 rather than on his actual birthday? 85.24.222.227 (talk) 14:48, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
