Nonsense statement
[edit]The article states A 2010 Bishops Conference survey found that 10.1% of Irish Roman Catholics did not believe in god.[7] -If they don't believe in God how are they Catholics ? Is the God they don't believe in represented on Earth by the Pope ?!?!? 2.127.208.169 (talk) 19:23, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Census V WID survey
[edit]I recently removed move text and a reference (from the lead to the body) which indicated that (as of 2022) 27% of Irish people surveyed indicated that they had no religion. I did this because:
- Frankly, the source seems a little questionable. The same source (Table DA2 of the 'Historical Political Cleavages and Post-Crisis Transformations in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ireland, 1953-2020' paper) suggests that, for the period 2011-2016, 28% of Irish voters had no religion. Which is dramatically different from the census returns (which indicated ~5.9% 2011 and ~9.8% in 2016). I'm not sure how we can account for such a dramatic (>300%-400%) variance from actual. Or how the number DROPPED(??) from 2011 to 2020? That the source for this table is given, vaguely, as "authors' computations using Irish political attitudes surveys" is not great either...
- It's only a few months til the preliminary 2022 census numbers (likely to include the responses to the religion question at a macro level) will be published. At which point we'll have more definitive (like-for-like) numbers. Not requiring "authors' computations" (from unnamed surveys). And which will undoubtedly show a marked increase in "no religion".
In all honesty I think we're better off waiting (not long now at all) for a more reliable/definitive/verifiable source. If we are to include the number which relied on "authors' computations using [unnamed/undated/unknown] surveys", I think we need to make it clear that this is the case. And that these numbers vary quite a bit from actual census results... Guliolopez (talk) 20:04, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
"A further 50% of people never attended church in 2020"
[edit]Yeah, no shit sherlock. Have they forgotten already what happened in 2020? Synotia (moan) 08:07, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- Indeed. I've removed that text. As not appearing to account for (or certainly not overtly mentioning) the fact that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Ireland, religious services were restricted to max 50 attendees by mid-2020. Guliolopez (talk) 13:24, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
