IRA presumption of victory
[edit]One aspect that needs to be added is the fact that the IRA had not won a military war in 1919-21, and conquered the whole island of Ireland. Instead, they had helped to win a political victory that had to be resolved by negotiation, and in the lead-up to negotiations Lloyd George had made it very clear that the new state could not be a republic. Therefore the Treaty was a compromise of the republican position months before it was even signed. This was made very clear in the Dail debates in late 1921, and the IRA commanders did not make a fuss.78.19.200.247 (talk) 09:27, 17 July 2019 (UTC)
