Notes

[edit]

Iris was also the name of Cleopatra's servant in Shakespeare (Spelled "Iras") and elsewhere. I'm not sure if this is historical or a fictional creation. Basesurge 23:59, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure either, but I would guess fictional. He doesn't get added to the disambiguation page unless there is likely to be an article about him, though. (And probably not even then, due to the spelling difference.)--Srleffler 04:21, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The French word for rainbow is not "iris". I have removed the statement for now. --193.60.222.2 (talk) 13:21, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rainbow meaning I added was reverted for a dubious reason

[edit]

A user reverted an addition I made yesterday: I mentioned in the article that "iris" means "rainbow" and linked to the Rainbow article. This is the oldest use of the word as a non-proper noun in English.

The reason given for the reversion is that this meaning is "already encapsulated" in the mythical meaning of Iris.

But a mythical human is an entirely different thing from a rainbow. We cannot expect users of Wikipedia to read in full every listing in order to learn the basic distinct meanings of a word.

So I am writing to seriously question this reversion. I strongly believe the rainbow meaning ought to have its own listing.Daqu (talk) 17:24, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of disambiguation pages, according to WP:MOSDAB, is as navigation aids. Unlike articles, which can contain any interesting information about a topic, dab pages should only contain information which is likely to help a user find the particular article they were really looking for. While "iris" can mean "rainbow", a user looking for the article on rainbows would certainly search for "rainbow". If they searched for "iris" and wound up here, they were likely looking for the god, the color, the plant, or one of the other entries here, for any of which "Iris" would be a reasonable article title. That is the key criterion for including an entry. — Swpbτ c 12:44, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Iris

[edit]

The use of the title "Iris" is under discussion, see Talk:Iris (plant) where the plant is proposed to be the primary topic. -- 70.24.248.246 (talk) 21:30, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Iris (Goo Goo Dolls song) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 02:30, 15 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
