A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on August 20, 2008. The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that, on opening night of Samuel Johnson's Irene, audiences cried "Murder!" after seeing the main character strangled on stage? | |||||||||||||

Pronunciation of the title
[edit]The evidence suggests that the title of the play (the heroine's name) is pronounced "Eye-REE-nee", not "EYE-reen". I hope somebody else can insert this; for some reason, my browser is refusing to support a lot of non-standard characters, including most IPA characters. Lexo (talk) 23:18, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Possible FA
[edit]Based on the above review, I would think that this could definitely go up at FAC but it might need a small section on themes (2 or 3 paragraphs). I am sure that I can put together such from the books that I have. How about it? (the reason why is that pages over 20k make better FAs). Also, two pictures can be added - a young Johnson and an image of his wife perhaps. Ottava Rima (talk) 14:43, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Revertion of edit by 72.225.204.182
[edit]This unnamed user deleted a phrase from the intro, on the grounds that the fact that Irene was successful during the author's lifetime invalidated the statement that the play was 'one of the most unsuccessful plays ever written by a major author'. The truth is that that claim, which I made, could be invalidated for other reasons, but not the one that 72.225.204.182 gives. Many plays by minor and indeed negligible authors have been as successful during the authors' lifetimes as Irene was, but those authors were not major authors, and I was making a claim about major authors. If the unnamed contributor wants to bring on well-referenced statistics about ticket sales for less successful plays by authors of comparable significance, he or she is welcome to do so. But although, say, Goldsmith's The Good-Natured Man was less successful in its original production than Irene was, I would be very surprised if it hasn't been revived more than a few times since then, which is a lot more than anyone can say for Irene (and Goldsmith is a relatively major writer). I stand by my original comment; I provided a reputable source to back up the claim that Irene had not been produced even once in over 200 years, so it's not original research. (I can think of plays by writers not normally associated with playwriting such as Donald Barthelme, Paul Auster and Wallace Stevens that may have been even less successful than Irene, but then these writers haven't been dead for as long as Johnson has and so their status in English-language literature is not as well-established. In any case their plays are still cheaply available, which is more than you can say for Irene.) Lexo (talk) 01:46, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
