[edit]

I corrected some grammatical errors. There will be more updates when I have time.

Fixed grammar.

[edit]

"The man who Yip Man competed against was beaten within a few strikes"

Means the opposite of what really happened. I've changed this to:

"The man who Yip Man competed against beat him with a few strikes."

2nd correction:

Actually the sentence was correct, your correction implies that Ip Man was beaten...

add the reason for his death

[edit]

I think that would be a good idea to add the reason for death wing chun's legend: cigarettes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.169.221.179 (talk) 17:43, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You'd need to find a verifiable source to back that up before you could add it. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 18:11, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why can't I add non-English reference?

Change title of the article to Ip Man?

[edit]

Ok so this is a controversial change I'm proposing, however I think having the article "Ip Man" and redirecting "Yip Man" to it would be more accurate. The man in question used Ip Man as the name in his passport and his son Ip Ching takes Ip (the family name) as his, and wrote a biography for Ip Man with the Ip spelling not Yip. Ip Chun has also been overseeing the movie about his father called Ip Man so perhaps its time we respected Ip man son's and used Ip instead of Yip?

more info here http://www.kwokwingchun.co.uk/yip-man-or-ip-man. 90.207.244.74 (talk) 15:30, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that Yip Man is the much more commonly seen romanization, which is what Wikipedia usually goes by. You also have books by Yip Chun such as this where the Yip spelling is used, and other family members (Lo Man Kam) using the Yip spelling for him. Additionaly, the Hong Kong government is who would issue the passport and English romanization - which is all it is, one of many romanizations of a chinese word. The only definitive spelling is the actual Chinese characters. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 06:24, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is a tricky problem. The book in question was actually written by Danny Conner. I don't think Ip Chun was too bothered how it was spelled. As you say there is only the Chinese spelling that is unquestionable. However with the recent release of the film Ip Man and Ip Ching constantly battling for people to spell his fathers and his own name Ip we should at least address the issue in the article if we dont change it completely. Any ideas how? 90.207.244.225 (talk) 16:37, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ip Chin says "Ip Man" is right and "Yip Man" is wrong: http://www.kwokwingchun.co.uk/2009/11/4/yip-man-or-ip-man — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.97.231.238 (talk) 08:55, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Needs a lot of work

[edit]
This wiki needs a LOT of work. I had to put in a couple of references. It is basically poorly constructed. I will try and research his biography and verify some of the information presented here. Some of the info seems like marketing propaganda or facts taken from movies rather than verifiable media. Huo Xin (talk) 07:39, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
However a good portion of what you added (such as "most well known such and such" was uncited. I'm all for having more referenced material, but please make sure if follows the english Wikipedia's views on biographies, neutrality, and notability and verifiability with regards to references. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 08:27, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I added this: "During the period of his youth, it was no uncommon for young men from wealthy families to acquire the habit of smoking opium. Although it was illegal in Hong Kong, it was not difficult to obtain on the black market. Yip Man was a well known opium addict and his fees were considered high at the time. He needed a dependable source of income to support his habit and his family in Foshan." I provided verification by reference. The original source for this information comes from Duncan Leung, one of Yip Man students. The rest of your complaint was not from me. The entire wiki needs restructuring and re-prosing to make it encyclopedic. I tried to do this here, just like I cleaned up the Bruce Lee article back in November. To see an example of what I consider a proper martial arts biographic page, look at the Chan Heung wiki that I did a while back. Huo Xin (talk) 21:19, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious information

[edit]

I suggest citations be added for the names of Yip Man's students to prove that they are really Yip's students. Exceptions can be made for those students who already have their own articles, such as Wong Shun Leung and Bruce Lee. If we don't, there's a possibility that vandals may add random names for fun, and hence reduce the credibility of this article.

I've doubts about Yip Man alternatively known as "Yeji Q". Does he really have that other name or is that an overlooked mistake? I've removed the Yeji Q name. Why was his title changed from "sifu" to "Gung-Gung"? It doesn't make sense to call him "Gung-Gung", unless you're his grandchild. I've changed it to "Grandmaster", because I think it suits Yip Man more.

暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 15:24, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Problem is twofold: 1) He was never referred to as "grandmaster" during his lifetime (and there is no actual Chinese term for that unless you start improperly using sigung like what's become popular nowadays). That started among some students after his death. 2) The martial arts pproject has guidelines on not using such titles in the article. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 15:39, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So should the "Gung-Gung" be restored? 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 15:40, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's the problem. Most of those types of terms are familial terms rather than "titles". The only thing I've ever seen him referred to in print during his lifetime was "Sifu", which depending on the characters used can be either familial or title. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 15:44, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, I think Sifu would be a better option than Gung-Gung. At least that's not something that a Chinese may use to address his grandfather or an elderly man. It's weird to use Gung-Gung. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 15:48, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some important facts are missing

[edit]

It is widely accepted in the world that Ye Wen was the most skillful fighter in the 20th century. He had a strategy that Westerners cannot possibly understand so maybe that is why it is not noted in this article. Also, his bravery in defending China against the Japanese is a well-noted fact of history. Please add these items. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.174.192.202 (talk) 13:52, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I suggest you find some sources to support those "facts" and add them to the article yourself. An important point to note is that what you've seen in the movies (Ip Man, Ip Man 2, The Legend Is Born – Ip Man) may not have actually occurred in history. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 15:30, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not to mention that mentioning him in this article has nothing to actually do with Yip Man, and as such would not belong in the article. And the fact the anonymous IP's descrptive sounds like the usual gweilo rehetoric about dumb Westerners, surrounded by WP:OR fantasy. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 19:08, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am Chinese and I agree that so much false information and rumor. First, Ye Wen is the correct name, maybe some of you should study Chinese a little harder. Second, he was a patriot and many young Chinese admire his bravery against the Japanese. To deny this fact hurts the feelings of millions of Chinese, and Wikipedia needs to respect the Chinese culture. Finally, he was never an officer of the Guomindang. They are traitorous dogs and we will never permit them in China. This sort of rumor is against the regulations of the internet as put forth by the Chinese government. Wikipedia needs to follow the laws. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:C5F7:EB00:FC35:D958:FFB8:E3BA (talk) 20:46, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Birth Date

[edit]

in the first paragraph, his birth date is specified at 6 November 1893, while in the info box it's 1 October 1893. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.43.73.226 (talk) 12:18, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Opium Habit

[edit]

It looks like any reference to opium has been scoured from the page. Is that because there aren't credible sources on this, or is the page being sanitized for hero worship? --70.177.177.180 (talk) 03:33, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has policies regarding the need for credible and reliable sources. If one is found, I don't see why it couldn't be added. But so far I've only heard the claim by word of mouth. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 15:16, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a sentence to the section about his time in Hong Kong referencing his opium addiction with the following two references:
If you can find more, please add them to the article.--Stvfetterly (talk) 19:56, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, he never a drug addict. We Chinese don't accept such things in our country. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:C5F7:EB00:78BD:AD9A:1D4D:1EF (talk) 22:53, 12 January 2013 (UTC) -- -- There is another issue I'd like to address here. In the article it sais:[reply]

"The main purpose of the Ving Tsun Athletic Association was to help Ip tackle his financial difficulties in Hong Kong,[16] which was said to have caused his supposed regular use of opium."

Shouldn't it be the exact opposite, if the opium habit were true? First the opium and then the financial difficulties? Since I have not the slightest clue how to get a hand at source #16, I am bound to let that weird statement sit in the article for now. I really hope someone can help out with this issue. --77.8.132.200 (talk) 23:55, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cheung Wing Sing

[edit]

There is something I do not understand: some biography said that Yip Man's wife, Cheung Wing Sing, died in 1943 in Foshan, others that she dies in Hong Kong in 1960. Which is the truth?--Dejudicibus (talk) 14:12, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly 1960. That is what Ip Man 3 says, even if it isn't entirely historically accurate. Kailash29792 (talk) 07:05, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Starting age of Wing Chun

[edit]

I changed Yip Man’s age when he started Wing Chun from 12 to 13. Indeed, both Leung Ting’s book and kwokwingchun.com mention 13. Yet, I have a small doubt because the initial version mentioned that Yip Man started in 1906. Knowing that Yip Man was born in October, either the starting year and the age are correct and Yip Man started after October, either the starting year is correct and both references are wrong, or the year is wrong. As I did not see any reference for the year, I tend to think that the year is wrong. Grégory Boisset (talk) 21:14, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Another reference, « 116 Wing Chun Dummy Techniques » from Yip Chun mention in page 100 that Yip Man started at the age of 9... Grégory Boisset (talk) 21:24, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding citation needed

[edit]

It seems as a citation for the passage "Yim Wing-chun (taught Wing Chun by Ng for self-defence)[citation needed]" can probably be found at the end of section "Wing Chun" on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ng_Mui. I don't know the subject, so I will not edit the page, and leave it for an expert to do so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.124.144.208 (talk) 09:54, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A Missing Movie?

[edit]

A movie titled Young Ip Man: Crisis Time was released on October 8, 2020, with Wenhao Zhao portraying Ip Man. I have not seen this film, and have no information about it besides the IMDb page and cursory internet searches. Should this movie be added to the list of Media Portrayals?
