Article and thermodynamic naming convention

The idea of an ionocaloric effect is thermodynamically dubious in this context as non-ionic materials perform just as well in these cycles. For example, a ethanol-water refrigeration cycle can be created that goes through the same thermodynamic stages described in this article, yet clearly this would not be ionocaloric. Thus, the thermodynamics seem to drive the definition of these cycles away from an ion-centered view point.

Since the entropic forces of the cycle are much more notably caused by the cyclic presence of freeze point suppression caused by the modified entropy of the doped or undoped refrigerant, it is more accurate to call these cycles freeze point suppression cycles. As with vapor compression cycles it is the cyclic presence of a state of compression that entropically drives the cycle.

Incorrect historical context

This article falsely portrays FPS cycles as a new development. To the contrary, open loop FPS cycles were first seen in the literature as early as 1936[1]. And closed loop FPS cycles were demonstrated in the literature in 2013[2].

This article, as currently written seems to ignore the thermodynamics of its own cycle, and is quite self-promotional in the way it ignores the historical context. Furthermore, it was created in part by the author of the original science paper (which has since been corrected via a published letter[1] without reference here) who is commercializing a variant of the technology.


First sentence

Current: "Ionocaloric refrigeration is used to cool matter so that it gets cold, it is an alternative to vapor-compression refrigeration."

I see two problems with that: 1. "Cool" is a very relative word which depends on the observer. Cooling something from 1000 degrees down to 800 degrees would not make the material cool imho. 2. If we therefor replace "cool" with "cooler" we get a sentence repeating the same statement at least twice.

So I suggest shortening the sentence without loss of content like, for instance:

"Ionocaloric refrigeration is used to cool (reduce the temperature of) matter, it is an alternative to vapor-compression refrigeration."
