[edit]The speculation has never been that Culianu was murdered on Ceausescu's orders. From personal observation, it was pretty clear that those were flushed out of the system very quickly. Speculation has been that it was Iliescu and co. that ordered the deed. TMLutas 04:37, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- You are partly right. However, most speculation I know of is that he was killed by the Securitate acting more or less independently (the "good part of the Securitate" that Vadim keeps taliking about). This may or may not be linked by observers to the Iliescu regime and the SRI - I have included part of the removed fragment back, in the eventuality that it did not. John Crowley
[edit]A friend of mine who is a big fan of novelist and essayist John Crowley says that Crowley has written at least one significant essay on Culianu and also used a character modeled on Culianu in his fiction. Someone may want to follow up on this. - Jmabel | Talk 17:59, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- Interesting. What I could find on a search is that he is not actually a character, but an influence over Crowley's depiction of Giordano Bruno. Dahn 18:32, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm. Then I should doubtless seek that out, because I actually studied Bruno pretty intensely back in college. (And, in any case, there was apparently at least one significant non-fiction essay.) Thanks, Dahn. - Jmabel | Talk 22:10, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
I just stumbled across this discussion while trying to find Crowley's essay on Culianu. I think it's "The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart" in the November 1989 issue of THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF SCIENCE FICTION. http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?116128 and https://www.nyrsf.com/subscribe-today.html. Crowley also mentions his friendship with Culianu here: http://johncrowleyauthor.com/a-note-on-alchemy/. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GordonVG (talk • contribs) 20:48, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

Celebrations of murder?
[edit]When et who? I did not find anything. My misunderstanding, of course. Who can help me? Anonymous
- Yes, I may be able to help. There are some quite extreme quotations in Anton's Eros, Magic, & the Murder of Professor Culianu, which he takes from the magazine Romania Mare. Leonard Gavriliu wrote that Culianu's murder was a blessing for him, so that he could now conduct field research on comparative religions from beyond the mortal coil. DBaba (talk) 01:45, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- Gavriliu continued, referencing the fact that the professor was murdered in a restroom, "The corpse from the water closet demolished everything: our prose, poetry, playwriting, arts, cinematography, philosophy, etc., killing all hope we have for tomorrow... But the most terrifying crime of that refugee in the gangster megalopolis of Chicago is divulged... in a nauseous apologia dedicated to that excrement over whom not enough water was flushed in the lethal toilet prepared for him as if by destiny..."
- The author continues on at length about Culianu's "fecal brain". It's quite disgusting. But as for its significance in demonstrating the world and politics in which Culianu labored, this information is at least to me salient. Cheers! DBaba (talk) 01:51, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
