Symmetric and alternating groups

[edit]

I found some constructions in Matzat and Malle (1999), and more in Jensen, Ledet, and Yui (2002), but I would like to see the original source. I looked up Hilbert's paper some 30 years ago and I seem to remember that Adolf Hurwitz was also somehow involved. Rice University has a way of sequestering its older books in storage and it takes some effort to get access to them. Scott Tillinghast, Houston TX (talk) 01:10, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Partial Results

[edit]

I believe the partial result attributed to Hilbert is actually Emmy Noether's result, using the Hilbert irreducibility theorem, proved in

Noether, Emmy (1918), "Gleichungen mit vorgeschriebener Gruppe (Equations with Prescribed Group)", Mathematische Annalen 78: 221–229, doi:10.1007/BF01457099 . —Preceding unsigned comment added by Colin McLarty (talkcontribs) 22:12, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Generic polynomials

[edit]

I do not see any links to the article on 'generic polynomials.' It is certainly related to this article. Scott Tillinghast, Houston TX (talk) 20:46, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
