Dutch definition of inundation
[edit]This page uses the Dutch definition of inundation, which is intentional flooding. In English, inundation is any kind of flooding, intentional or natural.

Since this is the English wikipedia, I think we should use the English definition.

Request for name change
[edit]The page with the title "Inundation" was originally a redirect page to Flood. This was unfortunate because "Inundation" and "Flood" are not complete synonyms, and "Inundation" (in the appropriate language) has articles on the Dutch, German and Norwegian wikipedias (in alphabetic order :-). I removed the redirect arrow (this was allowed under the relevant rules) and wrote the article about the concept of Inundation, following the lines of the other-language articles. And linked this article to the other-language articles.
However, when I looked at the "what links here" option, it turned out that many articles had in good faith linked to the redirect page. It is not reasonable to ask all these editors to change their articles. Putting in a "disambiguation page" would only make things worse, as in that case everybody (both the people who meant to link to Flood and those who always meant Inundation) to edit their articles. I therefore think it best to change the article title, and change "Inundation" back to the redirect-link. But this is technically impossible, because the redirect link would now overwrite a "previous article". I therefore now propose to do a Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests. I propose as the new title "Military inundation" as this covers most of the current article (the definition section takes care of the rest). An alternative would be to make it "Inundation (military)", but the drawback of this would be that it probably entices someone to interpose a disambiguation page, which is to be avoided for the reasons I stated above.--Ereunetes (talk) 17:30, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- Well, doing nothing is probably the best solution in view of the discussion below. The "soft redirect" at the top of the article may be a sufficient solution for the problem I indicated above.--Ereunetes (talk) 00:23, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: no consensus to move the page to any particular title at this time, per the discussion below. Dekimasuよ! 19:17, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Inundation → Military inundation – current title was originally a redirect page with many articles in good faith linking to it; the best solution would be to make it a redirect page again (which requires assistance); see Talk:Inundation --Ereunetes (talk) 17:36, 24 May 2018 (UTC)--Relisting. - @Ereunetes: Page Inundation is about flooding land for various purposes, not only military. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:50, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- Support but not sure about "military" - this article on deliberate inundation shouldn't really have been created here and should be moved out. Inundation should redirect as it did before to Flooding. In ictu oculi (talk) 21:51, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

- But "Support but not sure about 'military'", followed by notes of further doubt, seem to amount to an oppose. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 22:45, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose since the scope is not limited to military. Consider merging back into Flooding as a section on intentional flooding. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 22:45, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Title Change
[edit]Inundation is not necessarily intentional nor is it necessarily related to water, the title should either be changed to better reflect the pages content, or it should be merged into the Flooding page as a subsection. Perhaps "Manmade Flooding"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Healovafang (talk • contribs) 04:03, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
